Dear colleagues and all,
I would like to share an open PhD position in our group at the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) in Leipzig. We are looking for someone interested in working at the intersection of climate science, data science, and the social sciences, with a focus on understanding the socioeconomic impacts of climate extremes through text data.
The project is part of the CLIMES Doctoral Network. The position will focus on developing and applying NLP and machine learning approaches to extract and structure information on the impacts of floods, droughts, storms, and heatwaves from multilingual textual sources. This includes building a benchmark dataset, quantifying uncertainty in reported impacts, and exploring causal and attributional statements.
The position is fully funded for 36 months and based in Leipzig, with planned research stays in Greece and Switzerland, as well as regular interactions within the international network.
We are looking for candidates with a background in fields such as computational social science, environmental sciences, geography, computer science, or related areas, and an interest in NLP, machine learning, and the societal dimensions of climate risks.
If you know someone who might be a good fit, I would be grateful if you could share this opportunity.
