Hi everyone,

I just wanted to give you a quick update: The 2.0.4 version of the Chrome extension is now live. You can find it in the Web Store here: http://links.android2cloud.org/chromewebstore

I wrote up a blog post that answers the common questions about updating to 2.0.4. You can find it here: http://blog.android2cloud.org/2011/03/204-landing-for-reals-this-time.html The crux of it is:
  • Uninstall or update 2.0.3
  • Uninstall the 2.0.4 beta and install it from the Web Store, so you get automatic updates
  • Never run two installations of the Chrome extension at the same time. Ever.
The blog post also has a quick post-mortem on exactly how I screwed up with the links-being-reopened issue we experienced. If you're interested in that kind of thing. I'll warn you, it's more technical than the average user would probably care about, and less technical than the technically proficient probably want.

Sorry for the issues.

Thanks,
Paddy Foran

Hi Paddy,

You said in instructions,
"Next, we need to give your extension a name. android2cloud has a fun feature that lets you choose which browser or device to send a link to... you may want to change it to something like "Laptop Chrome""
But when I tried to give it a name which had spaces I got  "Error: Spaces cannot be included in the Device Name. Please use only numbers, letters, underscores (_) and hyphens (-)."

Did you try giving it a name without spaces? Like "LaptopChrome" or
"Laptop_Chrome"? That should work.

That does seem a bit misleading in the extension instructions though,
but hopefully not something that will be so outrageously frustrating
for users that Paddy has to release a new version just to fix this.

Yes, it does allow to set a [browser] name without spaces. I just wanted to point out on misleading instruction.

Android2Cloud didn't work on my machines / phone for a long time. I just unistalled a Chrome extension (11.0.686.3 dev Chrome on WinXP), installed it back from Web Store, went through instructions of setting it up, then uninstalled Android app and re-installed it from Android Market.
It still doesn't work. No error messages when I send a page from my Nexus One (Gingerbread), but Chrome do es not open a page.

Hi Vladimir,

Sorry you're having issues. :( Could you give me some console output for the background.html page?

Thanks,

Hi Jason,

You should always keep the Chrome extension up to date, as best as you can. I meant, however, that you should never run the extension twice on the same computer. As long as the computers use different Identifiers or Device Names for their browsers (or even two browsers on the same machine with different Identifiers) you're ok. :)

Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks,
Paddy Foran

Hi Paddy,

Thanks for the great work!

When you say "Never run two installations of the Chrome extension at
the same time. Ever.", do you mean two installations on the same
computer, or do we need to keep all of our computers chrome extensions
in sync on the same version?

Thanks,
Jason
