Hi Team,

I've been thinking about names for our product. I think that names can go a long way towards creating the kind of emotional connection that we have been looking for.

I really like some of the associations with the word "threshold," in the physical space kind of meaning. The threshold is where you walk through the door of your home, so it has a feeling of home and comfort, but also of transitions. I think it matches pretty well with the product, as something you interact with as you cross the threshold. Unfortunately, the world threshold is not that specific...a lot of people will immediately think of thresholds for pain. And threshold just doesn't have a very good feeling in the mouth.

This lead me to think about "verge" as another transition word. Unfortunately no homey feeling to that one.

How about "hearth"? It does have a good homey feel to it, and has an association with energy. however, it doesn't feel very nice in the mouth.

Does this inspire anyone?

Sorry if I am getting too wild here with my ideas. I am of the opinion that naming is a good place to include emotion, so I tend to shy away from names that are very literal. This is why I'm not super fond of the idea of "dial down," for example.

We could also look into words that imply brightness and welcoming homes (because this is a device that lets you have a warm, bright house while at home).

Any thoughts?

hm... i dont have any paritcularly brilliant ideas, but im not particularly fond of "hearth". it seems not a common word that we use right now and it doesn't seem to make a good connection in my brain...

tomorrows meeting is 1-3 right? just checking.

Yes, meeting 1-3 today. I'll keep brainstorming on names. Flint? Maybe too antiquated...

regarding names, here what Alice wrote us yesterday: "Did the 30 sec. elevator pitch inspire any new naming of the title of your project? I think the title has to have the word "energy" in it. How about "Easy in-home energy display"? Although I think you can do better than this. Or even Easy in-home energy display: Using persuasive technologies to save home energy "

i don't know if this advise was only for the NCIIA stuff or for our class project.. she thinks we should keep the word 'energy' into it which supposes a long name made out of many words.
I don't have particularly strong feeling at the moment but wanted to remind it to you. I will work on that by 1pm too.

see you later,
Caro
