Hi Group,

I am trying to setup an all-in-one Kazoo v4.0 cluster to test new version of the apps. But I am having some difficulty getting stuff like rabbitmq, kazoo-apps, ecallmgr working.

1 - Installed freeswitch, haproxy, kamailio using existing yum methods.
2 - Clone into branch 4.0 of kazoo.git
3 - Erlang version 18.2
4 - Ran Make in /opt/kazoo and it appears everything goes well

Post this I am unable to figure out how to start amqp, ecallmgr. Another question I have is around database. Does it require just a normal couchdb installation? (I infer we are not using bigcouch anymore from v4.0)
I tried taking clues from manual installation document but did not work. It refers to certain files / scripts that I dont see in 4.0
I also referred to https://github.com/2600hz/kazoo/blob/4.0/doc/installation.md.

I am doing this on centos 6.x. Using debian will require a lot of compiling from source I assume for kamailio, freeswitch etc.

Has any one been able to get it installed on centos? I am open to installing it on debian as well.

Thanks,
Sangram

Hi Sangram,

I would recommend trying on Debian - all projects Kazoo relies on should
have Debian packages you can use. You shouldn't need to compile them
from source. Debian packages for Kazoo are coming but compiling from
source should still be straight-forward.

I know there was a change in how the kazoo-configs repo is laid out (how
/etc/kazoo is setup) but otherwise the installation instructions should
work for getting Kazoo running. Do note that you no longer need to run
ecallmgr in its own VM - it can run along side all the other Kazoo apps!
Of course you can run it separated out as well.

Hi James

Is there an install guide for Debian with Kazoo 4 or is it coming soon?

I tried following https://github.com/2600hz/kazoo/blob/master/doc/installation.md but it is actually a mix of Debian and Centos.

Thanks

Kerry

Packages that will make this super easy are close! But, the install
guide can get you Kazoo installed (the first part of that doc you
linked):

https://github.com/2600hz/kazoo/blob/master/doc/installation.md#short-version

All of the other components, Couch, RabbitMQ, FreeSWITCH, and Kamailio,
should all be apt-get installable.

So, install packages, build Kazoo from source, and configure each
component to talk to each other. Most commands should be the same or
close between CentOS and Debian.

Hi James,

Do you have a possible timeframe in line for the packages that will make everything "easy"?

Thanks!

Hi Kerry,

once I found out some way to do it is really easy even without packages.
Configuring everything is another task. :)
Did you install couchdb, freeswitch, haproxy, rabbitmq and kamailio?
I did a mix of installing from source and packages.

Yeah I always have been surprised about how 'good' everything is documented.
Doc's with half debian half centos is just not done.

Hi guys,

I am glad you brought this up actually. The goal here was always collaborative documentation but nobody really liked Confluence. We now moved to Markdown files.

Joe, since you have energy here, can we setup a call maybe (maybe a weekly conference call) like is common with most open source projects and we can show folks like you how to do things and then you can help us document it?

                Let me know your availability.

Also, I am working with a new core engineer on our basic training,
installation guide, and other docs targeted to folks just getting
started with Kazoo.

Part of the issue with the installation doc is that we fused installing
the Kazoo ecosystem doc with installing Kazoo Erlang code from source,
which is obviously confusing and wrong. My plan is to have a high level
installation.md doc with links to Debian/CentOS-specific installation
docs off of that (kind of like you see with INSTALL, INSTALL.Unix,
INSTALL.OSX, etc.

But I second a community call where we can coordinate contributions and
help people help the project!

I have a 4.0 docker image on github that may help to reference.  All of our images are open source. There is only one pending issue I'm trying to resolve with zone's but other than that it's working really well and has good documentation.

Github

The build script for the image will probably answer alot of about installing kazoo in debian jessie

Keep in mind that some of those variables are coming from the Dockerfile itself

Also that you don't want to do everything here verbatim, because this is for a container environment specifically.

I think most questions will be handled by the README but if not let me know and I'll do my best.

We are still working on some fixes for 4.0 itself. That has taken up all our attention. I think James was over-excited :-) when estimating that first date.

Let’s make a new date of December sometime. We can’t move any faster right now I don’t think. There’s too many moving parts ATM

Though had to install quite a lot from source (dependency hell)….

I have attached the logs for reference. If someone can help I will appreciate it.

I am using esl-erlang so never built erlang, but it seems you are missing the libwxgtk3.0-dev package (at least if on Ubuntu 16.04).

root@connect /home/lox # apt-cache search wx-config

Hi guys,

I successfully installed and configured :
- kamailio
- freeswitch
- couchdb
- rabbitmq
- haproxy
Everything is on Debian 8.

My questiontions are :
- how can I run the kazoo server ?
- is there any documentation how to create init script for debian ?

what exactly kz-ecallmgr and kz-whistle_apps do ?
And again, is there any documentation how can I configure and run those apps ?

Hi Jan,

see my comments below. I am in no way an expert or near but trying to solve some of the problems you mentioned too.

My questiontions are :
1. what is the next step after make when I follow https://github.com/2600hz/kazoo/blob/master/doc/installation.md#short-version

What I did
- make build-release
- make sup_completion and link to /etc/bash_completion.d/
- link sup to /usr/bin and changed KAZOO_ROOT  to /opt/kazoo/_rel/kazoo
- chowned everything under /opt/kazoo to user kazoo

- how can I run the kazoo server ?

I do run 2 screen sessions, one with /opt/kazoo//scripts/dev-start-apps.sh
the other one with /opt/kazoo//scripts/dev-start-ecallmgr.sh (both as user kazoo).

- is there any documentation how to create init script for debian ?

Interested in this too!
I noticed there are some scripts under /etc/kazoo/system/systemd but was not able to adjust them in a way they run properly under ubuntu/debian,

Hello Darren,

I was really excited when Kazoo 4 was launched and with the new features, it came with. Also, I have been following mailing list and discussion but somehow I am not able to properly install Kazoo 4 and test its entire features. Can you please guide me to a documentation for Centos and Debian Installation for Kazoo 4.

Also, are we near to deb packages :)

Thanks

I would agree except you are right when FS switched to Debian we had already standardized on CentOS. And the probably is CentOS does such a crummy job keeping up with things like the latest video drivers.

We really don’t want to be in charge of the FS builds anymore.

However, the FS builds keep breaking occasionally so we have to operate at least a mirror or something (for example mod_shout is no longer built). We are working with them on that, they’re pretty open to helping so that is our hope atm but I need to find some time with Ken Rice to go over this and make sure we can make it work.

However supporting two isn’t so bad, once it’s installed they work the same, so we will probably do that, though I agree it does take time away. But people have their preferences. If we switched to Deb we’d get a whole bunch of people using CentOS in their corporate environment (where it’s the defacto / more trusted) and so we’d end up needing to do that too..

Like many things, I don’t think we’ll please everyone no matter what we do. If we support both, it will take more time. If we support only one, people will complain they want the other. (This is how we got here in the first place)

Subject: Re: Install Kazoo v 4.0

I'd like to throw my 2 cents in because this is a bit of a pet peeve of mine.  It is difficult enough to get Kazoo set up and working properly on one OS.  I am of the opinion that 2600hz should standardize on one OS and focus on the software instead of creating multiple distributions.

I guess the fact that the Freeswitch project seems to favor Debian probably has something to do with this motivation.  Anyways, if people want to use Debian they can just install from source and use deb packages from other projects.
