Posting this as I have once again encountered it (this comes
up so often).
Symptoms: HP laptop, SSD, after shutting down (normally or
otherwise), the next reboot goes into the repairing your
computer screen but never makes it as far as the actual
recovery mode. Problem never goes away no matter how many
times your force a reboot.
Cause:
The issue is caused by one or both of the following conditions:
1) Even though the machine has an SSD, for some reason HP
also included 'Optane' and the optane drive has become
corrupted.
2) HP pre-encrypted the drive using Bitlocker; and a disk
error occurred which is likely why the recovery system is
unable to load and bitlocker may have contributed to the
corrupted optane partition. This generally makes both the
optane and main windows partitions inaccessible, even with a
live recovery system on a USB or DVD. The bitlocker
decryption key will also not be available anywhere, as it
was enabled at factory, so will not have been backed up to
the Users Microsoft account as expected; rendering the drive
impossible to unlock to recover user data.
Fix:
Disable Optane in the bios/firmware, and once you regain
access to windows, turn off bitlocker.
1: Force the HP laptop off by holding down power button
2: power the HP laptop up again and immediately start
tapping or holding down the escape key (may vary by laptop
which yours requires) pick the enter bios/cmos settings
option in the menu that appears after a boot logs scrolls
down the screen.
3: In bios setup locate the optane menu (either in storage,
settings or security depending on bios version) select to
preserve data, and select the disable optane option. This
will take several minutes. Bios will appear to have locked
up/frozen while processing this option - dont touch anything
until it finishes (maybe plug the power cord in if you have
not already)
4: chose the save changes and exit setup option
5: laptop will reboot, and likely immediately boot to
windows without issue, log in
6: open windows settings and search for "bitlocker" it will
suggest "drive encryption options" or similar wording
7: click the little slider next to "encrypt this drive" on
the screen that appears to the off position. Wait for the
progress bar to finish.
Laptop should now work as expected, and the recovery system
should be functional again should any future boot issues occur.
If for any reason your REQUIRE your hard disk to be
encrypted, (industrial secrets etc) once decryption has
completed, reboot, sign into your microsoft account to log
back into the laptop, then turn the encryption option on
again - this should now give you an option to backup your
bitlocker key, and a copy should also be added to your
microsoft account this time allowing recovery at a later
time if needed.
This means if you need to use the recovery system, it may
only require your password, or if you manually enter your
bitlocker key - recovery will mostly work even with the disk
encrypted now. (unlike before)
