Genealogy Conferences in 2011
On February 10-12, 2011, over 3,000 people attended the first annual RootsTech conference in Salt Lake City, Utah. The purpose of this conference was to bring together family history enthusiasts and technologists to discover new solutions in the field of genealogy. For more details about the conference, refer to the previous article in the December 2010 newsletter.

RootsTech was a great success, and has enjoyed a host of free publicity before, during, and after the conference. Feel free to browse the Internet, or check out the Twitter feed for the #rootstech hashtag, to see what people are saying about this landmark event.

RootsTech 2.0 is scheduled for February 2-4, 2012, in Salt Lake City, Utah, and you will be able to register at rootstech.familysearch.org.

The FamilySearch indexing team was proud to attend RootsTech and is planning to attend the following conferences in 2011:

As we work together to complete 220 million records this year, we feel it necessary to talk face-to-face with as many current and potentional volunteers as possible. If you live in any of these areas, please come visit us. We would love to meet and talk with you!

This Project Sponsored by...
Written by Byron Bailey, a delegate to the MGC

There is a new FamilySearch indexing project, sponsored by the Michigan Genealogical Council (the MGC). The U.S., Michigan—County Marriages, 1820–1956, project is open to everyone, and we encourage everybody, especially those with an interest in Michigan genealogy, to volunteer in the indexing. Also, volunteers who are not currently associated with another indexing group or stake are welcome to join the Michigan Genealogical Council group where they will receive updates, tips, and other project-related information along the way. (Instructions on how to join a group can be found in the sidebar on the right.)

Another 120 Family Members
Every day more and more researchers worldwide are benefiting from your efforts. Some of these people have shared their successes and gratitude with us. Here are two of these stories:

"I just wanted to let you folks know that I have been searching for information on Martha Kinsel Holland for about 10 years now. . . . Happily, I found it this morning around 2:00 A.M. Wow! Tears filled my eyes. After plugging in a few pieces of data into that previous 'dead end' of my line, a virtual explosion occurred. By 6:00 A.M., I had located another 120 family members. Thanks so very much, everyone!"

"This website is just the greatest and most convenient on the Internet. To have this at my fingertips allowed me to solve almost every mystery in my tree. I have spent 30 years researching, and because of this program, I have accomplished more in the last few months than in all 30 years. Thank you all so much."

These stories only happen because of the time and effort given by indexers like you. Thank you for all you do!

Indexing Tip: Hiding and Organizing Fields
Many projects include multiple types of forms. The information to be indexed can often vary in the order it appears on the documents. As the order changes from form to form, the data entry fields can be reorganized to match the documents.

(Note: This feature is only available for projects which have the Table Entry option.)

To reorganize the fields:

  1. On the menu bar, click View.
  2. Click Organize Fields.... The Organize Fields dialog box will appear.

  1. Under Selected Fields, click the field you want to move.
  2. Click the up arrow or down arrow to move the selected field to the desired position.
  3. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each field you want to move.
  4. Click OK when you are finished.

Fields can also be hidden if the information asked for is not found on the type of form you are indexing.

To hide fields:

  1. On the menu bar, click View.
  2. Click Organize fields....
  3. Under Selected Fields, click the field you want to hide.
  4. Click the right arrow to move the field to the Hidden Fields column.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each field you want to hide.
  6. Click OK when you are finished.

If there are hidden fields in your batch that you need to show again and edit, follow steps 1 and 2 above, and then do the following:

  1. Under Hidden Fields, click the field you want to show.
  2. Click the left arrow to move the field to the Selected Fields column.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for each hidden field you want to show.
  4. Click OK when you are finished.
