I am able to load PCMCIA card drivers and a CD-RW driver from
config.sys under a DOS boot (on a computer with Windows 95 OSR2), but
I can't get MSCDEX to load. The computer simply hangs.

Any suggestions of how to get MSCDEX to load or of where I can find
such information?

Thanks very much.

Did you try putting a copy of MSCDEX in your root directory then making a
path to it? You can also direct Autoexec.bat to run it for you , but you do
not need either autoexec.bat or config.sys in windows95 unless you plan to
run something that need them from the root (c:)

You are correct that MSCDEX doesn't load from config.sys. What I
meant to say was that (a) I am able to load the PCMCIA card drivers
and the CD-RW driver from config.sys, but (b) I am unable to load
MSCDEX from autoexec.bat without hanging the computer.

If I eliminate MSCDEX from autoexec.bat, I am able to boot, but if I
then attempt to load MSCDEX from the command line, I hang the
computer.

I have tried loading MSCDEX with the same types of parameters that you
have listed, except I followed the CD recorder manufacturer's
recommendation of using /M:4. What would the effect be of using
/M:32?

Thanks again.

Since I understand that Norton Ghost 2001 needs to run from a boot
directly into MS-DOS, I have been following Ghost's directions about
trying to boot to DOS (instead of Windows 95 OSR2) from a boot floppy
disk.

I have tried loading MSCDEX from an autoexec.bat file on the boot
floppy, with MSCDEX itself being on the boot floppy. Alternatively, I
have tried giving the full path to the MSCDEX copy on the C: drive.
In both cases, the computer hangs instead of loading MSCDEX.

If I don't try loading MSCDEX, the computer boots into DOS, but then
cannot read from the CD-R.

I would appreciate any further suggestions. Thanks!

I discovered the cause of my problem. Norton Ghost, which I used to
create the boot disk, installs IBM PC DOS instead of MS-DOS.

Neither the Microsoft mouse driver nor Microsoft's MSCDEX.EXE would
load under IBM PC DOS.

When I created a boot disk from Windows 95, installing MS-DOS, both
the mouse driver and MSCDEX.EXE loaded correctly.

The Windows98 Startup Disk will load generic CD ROM drivers.
