I have a strange problem with some pictures on web pages not displaying.
When I open Some web pages , some of the pictures show fine but others just
show the placeholder with a small red 'X' in the corner. If I right click on
it and select 'display picture' is usually displays ok.
If I refresh the page it sometimes displays more of the pictures and
sometimes less. It seems to have a mind of its own as to which pictures are
automatically displayed, (by pictures I include buttons etc.) Whenever I go
back to a page a different set of pictures go missing.
It is driving me nuts.
This has only been a problem for about 6 weeks but for the life of me I
cannot think of any software updates other than Microsoft's 'critical'
security updates that I have downloaded.
In trying to fix it I have so far-
Deleted my cache and all *temp files.
emptied my history folders.

Used add remove programmes in control panel to repair I.E.. ( I.E. 5.01)
Checked that in internet tools>advanced the 'display pictures' box is
checked
Tried with and without 'error control' checked.
Tried with and without 'use FIFO checked
tried my IP packet size at Auto, medium mad large.
My modem is a V90. K56 Flex HSP PCI modem with a PCTel chipset.
I have tried reducing its max speed from 115220 to 57600
I have added in the advanced section - extra settings 'AT&F' as suggested
by my ISP ( Lineone)
I have tried 'Compress data' on and off.
'Use flow control is checked' and 'Hardware RTS/CTS is checked.

Internet Options security is set at 'medium'
My Lineone setting is set to 'automatically detect settings.'
'use proxy server' is unchecked
on 'server types' -advanced options
only 'enable software compression' and in allowed protocols 'TCP/IP' is
checked.

My PC is a PIII 450 MHz with 128 Mb ram and 12 GB hard disk of which 10GB is
unused. I run windows 98 SE

I would appreciate any help

Keith

Hi Keith,
In IE5, click Tools>Internet Options>Advanced Tab>Scroll down to
Multimedia and put a check in "Show Pictures" and uncheck "Show image
download placeholders".
HTH,

Hi Keith,
I just went to the Windows Update page, and there's an updated
*update*.
Here's what it says:
Security Update, June 2, 2000
1969 KB/ Download Time: 7 min
This update resolves the "SSL Certificate Validation" security
vulnerabilities in Internet Explorer. Download now to prevent a
malicious
Web site operator from posing as a trusted Web site or reading
selected
files on your computer. Note This update has been revised since its
original
release to address a minor issue that causes Internet Explorer to
display
images incorrectly on some Web sites. Microsoft recommends that all
users
download this updated version. Read this first

I remembered your problem and wondered if possibly this may be the
cause of
your problem.
FWIW,
Miggsee

Thanks again Miggsee,

I had installed that, but decided to go back and reinstall it just incase it
was at the root of the problem.
Guess what ?

Still the same!

Thanks again for thinking of me.
