A strange thing happened today. :) I was in the local Apple store trying the
new iPad and the guy sitting next to me typed something into the iPad he was
using and this 'inverted the colours'. Then the staff came over and asked
him what he had done to it. The guy said "not a thing", but they then phoned
the California branch and spoke to the CEO! The fellow was told he would be
facing criminal charges and faced a hefty fine. They said he had
broken/infringed copyright of Apple software (or words to that effect) and
he was in big trouble. At this point the guy was clearly crapping himself.
That's when the police came in and he was taken away. I have no idea what
happened to him, but surely all this was a bit 'OTT', yes? What could he
possibly have done to the iPad to render it useless? To me, it looked like
he just typed in some code and 'ran' it, but could that actually trash the
thing? BTW, he appeared to open up a window with a sort of 'DOS' look to it,
and typed in some code or other. Anyone know what it might have been? Just
thought I'd share this with you. guys.

I think the above post should be filed under the category of

File it under whatever you like mate. That's exactly how it happened.
I have a feeling there must be more to it than I know. I mean, there must be
some apps out there that people are using which can do this very thing (are
there?). Maybe it was some kinda practical joke? I dunno, but the whole
thing was very surreal, and a bit scary too I have to say. BTW, our Apple
has seats! And trying to get an empty one is not easy. :) They let the kids
in and let them muck around with the iPads etc.,. So, I sat with the kids!
:) I don't think for a minute that Steve Jobs was on the other end of the
phone, but why the heck did they tell the guy they were talking to the CEO?
Hmm. Maybe there are some weird folks who work for Apple.

I say horsehockey because things like that don't happen that damn quickly.
In the USA, the store owner or manager would have to file a proper police
report, file the charges in a court house, then maybe the dude gets
arrested in a few days. It ain't gonna happen while they're on the phone
and the idiot is still in the store.

Because the guy made the phone useless? Bullshit. Without the operating
system it's nothing more than a display item or door prop. They could have
back in full working order in 10 minutes.

Actually - no.

If you go to a store and accidently break something the store will make
you pay for the damaged goods. They aren't going to call the police and
the won't arrive that quicky. I don't know Richard and some of the shit
he spews is just that - shit. However the story does NOT sound right.

This situation does not rise to the level of an arrest unless there is
MUCH left out of this story such as the patron of the store became
beligerant and abusive. Then he could be charged as a disorderly person.
Until the situation escalates, someone in a store who breaks an oject is
civily liable and not criminally liable.

interesting things about the iPod, Apple, the NSA, just what you
are and are NOT allowed to do with equipment you don't own (AND

Many people consider ISP to stand for Internet Surveillance
Provider. Many people say e-mail is the most effective personal
surveillance system ever devised. Now, what about iPods which
combine (AFAIK - I don't even own a cellular phone) a telephone,
camera, basic internet access with email, and in many cases have
your most if not your entire life (in one form or another)
stored on them?

City Programmer Found Guilty of Felony Computer Tampering

Terry Childs, the SF City Hall's network engineer who almost brought the
city a stand still after withholding crucial passwords, was found guilty of
felony computer tampering on Tuesday. KTVU reports: "After nearly three days
of deliberation, the jury Tuesday afternoon found Childs -- who had worked
for the Department of Technology since 2003 and built the network -- guilty
of one felony count of computer tampering with an allegation that the losses
from the crime exceeded $200,000." Childs faces two to five years in the
pokey. Mayor Gavin Newsom, if you recall, had to personally visit Childs in
jail to retrieve the passwords.

I followed that story very closely on slashdot & elsewhere. The
conviction is utter fucking bullshit. TC was trying ( in vain ) to
protect the network from klewless fucks that dont know wtf they are
doing. He *built* the thing. He was tired of people NOT following
security rules and breaking shit. Sure, he might be tad socially
retarded but many very highly skilled people are. What was needed was
BETTER MANAGMENT. What happend was stupid people (ala Ideocracy) called

I agree with the other poasters; this story doesn't sound right to me
either.

While I haven't used an iPad, the iPhone 3GS has an "accessibility"
feature that can be turned on to invert the colors of the display. I
wouldn't be surprised if the iPad shares this feature (since it's
underlying OS is largely the same).

If the guy actually did destroy the iPad with some code, it would have
had to be jailbroken (or similarly hacked). You can't do crap on the
locked-down closed iP* platform but mess with settings, download apps
from Apple's sanctioned software library, and visit websites.

Big deal. Nothing new or earth shattering in that.

For what *exactly*? because an unsold good went bad in the store?

Immediately taken away? doesn't happen. Anywhere.

> I have no idea what happened to
> him,

Makes it even more doubtful. You *would* have heard the entire conversation
between the cop, store staff and the "suspect" if it all happened. The
conversation stating *exactly* what he was being charged with and why. And
absolutely the cops wouldn't have just arrested someone on the spot based
on what some Apple employee said.

I severely doubt you could think up anything more convincing than that
nonsence above. "DOS" or CLI as it's more correctly called is rarely
necessary or required for the creation of working code, It just allows a
more efficient interface. Certainly any apps for an iPod are certainly not
going to be just written on them. They'll be cross compiled to the target
system using a standard computer.
