Xnews was designed as a newsreader for text groups with some
limited binary capability. It is strange that you only see it asw
fit for the opposite.

WLM never was and never will be a newsreader. It is even less fit
for that function than Lookout Distress was. Do everyone
(including yourself) a favor and keep looking.
