external hard drive

Seagate external hard drive 160gb 2mb cache usb. I bought norton ghost to do
a system back up. I did this about 1.5 years ago. Today when turned on my
system shows it in the "safe to disconnect" icon on the task bar. the
computer does not recognize it as the "F" drive or anything else. I thought
it might be defective so I plugged it into my sons computer. (he did). It
was recognized and all files present. I took his Seagate ( same model) and
connected it to my desk top. All was recognized just fine. I must be missing
something. What , besides my head , is messed up?

Um, probably the drivers. Try uninstalling the relevant software,
rebooting, installing, rebooting and trying the hard drive again. The
idea that backing up to another hard drive was a valid way of ensuring
your data is certainly a foul-up though.

Please trim your posts and the signatures.
Try what I said. If the drivers are corrupted, any wierd effects could
happen. Backup to CD's or DVD's. Hard drives aren't as reliable period.

I hope this is proper protocol,(trim) I do not know about the signatures. I
looked for Seagate to find properties and do not see it. where do I find the
drivers. I think the drivers are on the Seagate as I do not have a disc with
it. Uninstall, they reinstall?

Is it possible that something else has laid claim to drive letter F?
Is the external drive visible in Disk Management?
If it is visible in Disk Management, can you assign it a drive letter other
than F?

You just cut it. Most worthwhile newsreaders (OE isn't - it's just free
software MS bundles with windows) will do it automatically.

Add/Remove programs in control panel perhaps? You got a cd with the
drive when you bought it right?

There is not a cd with the Seagate. There is not anything like that in
Add/remove either. I spoke with Seagate today. They think there is a driver
conflict with the system board drivers and want a start in safe mode and
reinstall he drivers. this is a bit out there for me. I have removed
programs and reinstalled before. Not drivers. Seagate had me remove 5usb
root hubs. I lost control of my keyboard and mouse. I had to do a power off
to shut down and restart. It took two restarts to get my keyboard and mouse
back.This is when Seagate said sys board driver problem. he could not
explain why an identical seagate works fine on this computer and the bad one
works fine on another computer.

The seagate does not show up in disk management. It does show up in Device
Management though. It also shows up in the task bar for disconnecting usb
device when done.

Sorry about the delay - I do a "clean up" of all my past posts every week.
Ok, did this malfunction happen before or after rebooting to normal
windows? If the former then you *really* have problems, otherwise: Try
this: boot to safe mode, remove *everything* under USB, HID <blank>
mouse, keyboard and ports just to be sure. The <blank> means that it can
be anything. You may see a item like HID mouse or Human Interface
Devices and HID mouse and/or HID keyboard in it. This is a wierd effect
of USB devices. Anyway, after this shut down, plug in a old *serial* or
PS/2 mouse and then start the computer and *leave* the computer until it
*specifically* asks you to do something. Use *only* the mouse you just
added.
The fact is that USB is the *worst* type of mouse and keyboard to have
due to the windows driver problem (i.e. not functioning after removal of
drivers and reboot) and the disproportional load they put on the
computer. There is *absolutely* nothing wrong with PS/2 or standard
keyboards and "old style" serial mice. How fast can you type or move the
mouse after all?
