Hope this is the right forum to ask. I'm setting up an FTP server and I
have a question. For some reason my FTP server doesn't seem to work all the
time. Sometimes I need to check or uncheck "automatically detect settings"
under IE Internet Options -> Connections -> LAN settings

For example ... try the following link ...
ftp://test:te...@24.100.222.110:21/Download_URL.txt

Most of the time it doesn't work (it would try to connect ....). If it does
show up, hit enter to try again ... I'm getting "page cannot be displayed".
Please help if you can.

It works fine in FileZilla ftp client; not in IE, though.

Server software is? Is it for internal / external use? You may have to
assign a LAN and ISP IP address to the server.

Server log gives no clues?

Connects via ftp commandline okay.

CuteFTP connects, I see the login msg, enter name/password then it tries
to resolve to 192.168.0.187 and fails. Are you doing any port
forwarding?

But then why would it work sometimes and not work at other times?

Yup, I saw the FAQ and just looked at enough to get it to work. Strange
thing is it works sometimes.

I am being a router with firewall but have configured the settings to allow
FTP port 21 access. Dlink tech support helped me configure it because at
first I couldn't even get into the router's firmware 192.168.0.1 until I
disabled "Automatically detect settings". So maybe it is a router problem
... not sure.

server software is BulletProof FTP Server 2.21. Not sure what is
internal/external use. I just created an account and tried to download off
my own server. I had no problems when I configured one a long time ago when
I didn't have a router (so maybe a router problem).

How do I "assign a LAN and ISP IP address to the server"?

I am using Rogers cable internet (not sure if static or dynamic). Also I am
using WinXP with built-in firewall disabled. My router is a DLink DI-704P.

server log is empty ... until I uncheck "Automatically detect settings".
Then it always works .. but only on the first try. When I check that box
again it doesn't work.

What is port forwarding? Sorry I'm a newbie. I guess not since I don't
know what it is. The only settings I have in my router is enabling FTP port
21 and that's it. Or do I need to enable port 20 also? (according to the
FAQ) If so, do I need to specify in the URL like this ...
ftp://test:te...@24.100.222.110:20/Download_URL.txt

Is the FTP for your own use only or public access(external)?

You may have to connect to the computers IP address, the one your router
issues, while everyone else uses the public address.

I don't recall what the reply was last time I suggested this to another
BPFTP user Q2,3,4,5.

http://www.bpftpserver.com/faq.php
Connection, internet

Q1 - What is my ip address ?
Q2 - My ip is dynamic, how to make it *fix* ? (dyndns, dns2go ...)
Q3 - How to use BPFTP Server behind a firewall ?
Q4 - How to use BPFTP Server behind a router ? (linksys, netgear,

Q5 - How to use passive mode with a router ?
Q6 - How to limit passive port range ?

Did you try PASV mode?

That would be your FTP client - "Automatically detect settings"?

Ok then if the BPFTP log is empty (which seems odd, its enabled?), check
the FTP client log, usually there is some sort of error code / message.

Say your public IP address is 24.100.222.110 and the FTP port is 21.
Port forwarding tells the router to send that to your PCs IP which may
well be 192.168.0.187 port 21 where BPFTP is running.

See
http://www.bpftpserver.com/faq.php#Connection,internet.4

You may well need to enable port 20, it's a control port, while 21 is
the data port.

These should also be allowed through any firewall on the PC.

>ftp://test:te...@24.100.222.110:20/Download_URL.txt

No, that's still 21.

BTW it's safer to use non standard ports. Common alternates are 21,8080,
8088 so avoid them. Try 7546 or something. This way any common scanning
for openings can't find the server.

In this case you need
ftp://test:te...@24.100.222.110:7546/Download_URL.txt

I haven't tried PASV mode. Never heard of it before. Didn't think it
needed to be so complicated.

I tried to connect using CuteFTP and this is the error I get ..

Nope, I meant "Automatically detect settings" in IE. That's probably why it
works in FTP but not through browser.

yes, well it's empty probably because it can't reach it .... like it's not
detecting at all so it couldn't be logged.

hmm ... that might be it. So if I do port forwarding it would work? I also
came across this which says that ftp servers need one ...
http://portforward.com/dlink/di-704prc.htm

First step it says to do is to set up a static IP. The thing is, I'm on
Rogers (in Canada) so it's most likely a dynamic ip correct? I never
thought adding a router would be so complicated.

Oh, I see. So I can use any port? Where can I configure this port? Is it
in the router settings instead of the port 21 for FTP? Do I need to change
anything in the BulletProof server software?

I really appreciate your help by the way.

I tried the following just now ... configured the settings on my router as
such by following :

http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1341&question=ftp+server
Advanced -> Firewall : Allow ftp WAN,* LAN,192.168.0.187 TCP,20-21

The following was already set up with the Dlink support guy on the phone ...
Basically it is from here ..
http://support.dlink.com/faq/view.asp?prod_id=1005&question=ftp+server
Advanced -> Virtual Server : Virtual Server FTP 192.168.0.187 TCP 21 / 21
always (should I remove this???)

Following the advise of entering passive mode, I then entered the following
in BPFTP server settings ...

Setup -> Passive Mode -> Check Use passive mode IP -> select Dynamic IP and
enter 24.100.222.110
Under Passive Port -> Enter port range 20 to 21

Since this conflicts with the port range that's mentioned in here (50000 -
50100) ..
http://www.bpftpserver.com/faq.php#Connection,internet.5

.. I've now changed the Firewall ftp ports in my router as such instead of
20-21. I'm quite confused about this .... am I suppose to enter the
50000-50100 range somewhere else in my router? Where do I enter this
passive port range?

Either way, when I try to connect with CuteFTP, I get the following error :

*** CuteFTP Pro 3.3 - build Aug 25 2003 ***

STATUS:> Getting listing ""...
STATUS:> Connecting to ftp server 24.100.222.110:21 (ip =

The only other thing I can think of is the static IP thing. I haven't yet

I don't have a Dlink router, but you need both of these. The 1st is the
firewall setting and the 2nd is the port forwarding to tell it which PC
to send the FTP stuff to.

You you need to allow the PASV port range 50000 on the firewall and
virtual server.

If your PC is DHCP from the router yes, its better to make it a static

Follow those instructions carefully, its all there
WAN/LAN, IP address (of FTP server) port range.

Looks like you fill in the DLink settings like this,

Enable , ftp , allow , source WAN, dest LAN , IP of server, TCP , 50000
, 50100, Always.

Pretty much as the example, only change the numbers as the BPFTP FAQ
said.

Same there just change the HTTP port 80 for FTP port 21, see the top
line of the Virtual Servers list on that example picture.

On the router DHCP is most likely default, so you may have already had
the PC set to DHCP, to find out check the router manual it should say
what the IP DHCP range is.

On your PC, Start / Run / CMD / OK. then,
ipconfig/all
(press return)
there is a line saying DHCP enabled. If not your PC has a static
address.

If it's DHCP what I did on my Netgear router was to reduce the number of
DHCP addresses to 20 and changed the low end of the range from
192.168.0.2 to 20. So all my DHCP addresses are 192.168.0.20 to .40.
This lets me put the servers in .2 to .19.

oh, then I already have this set. I already replaced the 20-21 with
50000-50100.

I already have the first line set as ..

Virtual Server FTP 192.168.0.187 TCP 21 / 21 always

Do you mean I need to change the second line HTTP from port 80/80 to port
21/21?

I downloaded the manual from the product page :
http://support.dlink.com/products/view.asp?productid=DI%2D704P%5FrevC
I couldn't find any mention of DHCP ranges.

Yup, it says DHCP enabled. So is your method better than what's described
here?
http://www.portforward.com/networking/static-xp.htm
How is it done because I don't see a DHCP entry in the router pages. Also,
after I change this to static, do I need to change it on my ftp server
software under Passive Mode -> check fixed IP instead of dynamic IP?

Also, from my ftp server logs I noticed some people were able to access my
test file. Does this mean it works now but just not using CuteFTP client or
Getright?

ftp://test:te...@24.100.222.110:21/Download_URL.txt

why?

The HTTP bit would be a typo then made me by.

Do more reading,

It's the same, if you are going to run a server it should be a static
IP.

You pich an IP address outside of the router dhcp pool, but within the
router's range.

Read, page 33-36.
Application Advanced settings.

So, you manually configure TCP/IP on the PC to a statis IP, then put
that same IP in the firewall / virtual server config in the router.

Only if you continue to use PASV, you did also remember to set your
client to PASV at the same time or untick the clinet PASV when the
server isn't?

It worked on commandline and WS_FTP for me. Did you try another client
yourself?

Why it wouldn't on others is a bit odd.

I've downloaded and tried Cerberus (http://www.cerberusftp.com) as I read on
a forum that it's easier to use and detects your IP automatically. That's
true as it detected that I have a "private IP".

The strange thing is, it works well when I FTP into it using CuteFTP client,
but only if in Cerberus the "is anonymous" box is checked (and I notice in
CuteFTP it defaults to "normal" rather than "anonymous" each time). However
it only works for the first User I created ... it does not work at all for
subsequent Users (even with the exact same settings).

Weird.

why?

BPFTP did that as well, in the drop down list for Multi IP Setup.

Never seen that, mind you I hardly use anonymous accounts.

It is a bit, well now it's my turn I am replacing my current router with
a Belkin the setup of which is more like your Dlink so it looks like I
have to rewrite my notes to setup an FTP server all over again.

Very strange. I just installed IIS (built in microsoft FTP server) and
after enabling it I could no longer access newsgroups (NNTP). I'm not sure
why because I did not block that port in my router settings. After undoing
the settings using System Restore I was finally able to get back on
newsgroups.

I have however made some progress .. I followed through with the static IP
settings and now I fixed the "automatically detect settings" problem! Now I
can view my test file without having to uncheck that box! :-)

I've now added my IP address 192.168.0.187 in that tab. I never knew about
that before. Does it help? Does my link work now from a browser?

ftp://test:te...@24.100.222.110:21/Download_URL.txt

It does not work with CuteFTP or Getright for me still.

It's has NNTP, but not by default unless you select more options. In the
IIS Manager you could have simply stopped NNTP or run the IIS setup to
remove it or in Control Panel / Services stop NNTP and set it to
disabled.

MSIE is okay, that's without the phishing patch.
Mozilla v1.6, No.
Opera 7.50 warns the URL has a name/password, No.
CuteFTP Pro 2.0, Yes. Using PORT setting not PASV.
WS_FTP 95, Yes, If using PASV press cancel then ok. Without PASV ok.

Strange. .. I tried WS_FTP 8.03 and it seems to work OK in passive mode and
non-passive. Also, with anonymous account too, passive and non-passive. I
don't know why it works with some clients but not others.

What does "phishing" mean by the way?
