Removing shortcut extension

When creating shortcuts to the desktop is there a way to do it without
the extension being included?

For example, if I right click the executable from FastStone Image Viewer
Portable and select Sent to > Desktop (create shortcut) it creates a
FSViewer.exe shortcut, I would like just FSViewer to show. Same goes
with other shortcuts to .txt or .pdf files.

Already have the Shortcut to... prefix and shortcut arrow disabled but
cant find a way to disable the extension from being included.


Using Windows 7 64 bit.

Regedit.exe ->

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\lnkfile]
"IsShortcut"="1"
"NeverShowExt"="1"

I think this may work, I've got all my extentions to show on purpose (so
I can't test easily).

Yes.

I've been editing shortcuts on and off for a decade now and was
wondering if I could create shortcuts without the extension, like most
installers.

Right-click > Send to. Still does it with the drag & drop.

I think you have an unfixable problem, unless you rename the
shortcuts after you create them.

Sent it to http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us instead of going through
the hassles of signing up to a forum. I'll let you know here if I get an
answer.

Will post to alt.windows7.general as well.

Looks like it can't be done.

From the Community Moderator and MVP "I don't think there is a way to
accomplish this. The name is copied from the Properties/Target path for
the file.".

Oh well...

It may still be possible if you write your own 'send to' item. That is
something I'd have to research though.

The guys at "alt.msdos.batch.nt" may be able to help, they are a good
bunch that may write a script for you.
