Hi all,

Differentiating a Leader from Manager.

The ten that I think of

Leaders

Managers

1.       Harbingers of change. Designs strategies

for change. Inspires to change.

Aspires and drives change and strategies, provides feedback for improvement.

2.        Have a vision and a greater picture. Articulates, provides a clear sense of direction, aligns strategies with vision -strategies to address the needs of market/customers/people/society.

Team leader and a worker. Plans, executes the mission and goal (aligned with vision). Resolves team conflicts, ensures effective utilization of resources; incentives and reward schemes to bring out the best.

3.       Takes initiatives to innovate and address the need of changing competitive environment for sustainability. Encourages continuous innovation for success.

Effectively driving the team for the tasks to achieve goals. Strategising goals and planning deadlines for getting timely results.

4.       Willing to unlearn and relearn, learning a continuous process. Respects managers’ perspectives and differences.

The traits of unlearning and relearning are supposedly available in a manager too. It’s the willingness that counts.

5.       Effective and dynamic persuasion, takes into account the feedback analysis.

Feedback analysis and communicating the same.

6.   Believer, tenacious- a never give up attitude for a cause, optimist.  Owns up and never quits.

.       Identifies and assigns responsibility and accountability. Getting the best out of individuals is one of the prime concerns.

7.   Enthusiastic and effective communicator. A creative listener (powerful interpretations of a certain perspective).

Individualistic (presence of this trait) - depends on the extent of extraversion, personality.

8.   Personal humility and intense professional will.  Paradoxical as it may sound, it’s a rare combination in a great leader!

Not a compelling presence. If available, could be a great future leader.

9.   Founders of culture. Leaving a legacy behind.

Followers of culture. Creators of a conducive environment.

10.   Challenges status quo, assumptions, thinks beyond the existing and possible - raising the bar always for managers.

Individualistic, again. The traits are for sure present in traces in a budding leader.

I hope you recollect the exercise during GMP!
Cheers,
N
