Hi Ian,

Thanks for an awesome event and will definitely return next year.  How about a 12 hour Triathlon instead of the 8-hour?

I raced the 8-hour solo and had 3 tire flats total during the event (those darn pricklies and pinch flats!) The first 2 I was able to help myself but the last one, I had run out of CO2 cartridge and patience was running very thin.  I had to hitch a ride back to TA from a State Park ranger whom I would say was kind enough to do that for me. Anways, when I returned I searched all over for mechanical support designated to the race. None was available. After cruising the parking lot with my bike in tow and advertising my dilemma,  I found a bike mechanic who was there supporting his brother from a relay team. He fixed my 3rd flat and off I went to continue my race.

Thanks again,
Leah

Yes, big bummer on the mechanical support. We had a few no shows
including food vendors and bike support. Next year I'll make different
arrangements to ensure we are covered.

Thanks for the feedback,

Ian

Hi Ian,
Great job!  I loved the change to the courses and the distances this year.  The distance balance felt much more natural with the shorter swim.  I think the run to/from the swim gives the race a lot of flavor and hope that stays the same- it's also great for the support crew to cheer you on in the middle of several swims.

I did the 8 hour solo and will absolutely be back again next year.  Some feedback for improvement: I was frustrated with the finish time rule change at the last minute (though I think it's a change for the better), I just wish we would have had some more time to adjust strategies.  I was also disappointed with the lack of post-race food and such, but it sounds like that was supposed to be there.  Lastly, is there any thought to brand anything with 8 hours?  I feel strange wearing a hat that says 24 Hour Finisher when I only did 8 hours.  I know that costs more and you'd have to do both triathlon and duathlon to please everyone, so I understand why it is that way, but just thinking out loud.

Enough with the "cons" - this is by far my favorite race to do!  I loved the motivation and smiles on the run throughout the day, this is the only race I've done where other competitors are encouraging you from start to finish, it's so much more than competition, it's personal achievement and it reminds me why I'm putting in all those training hours!

Thanks again- see you next year!

Shannon

Leah, I feel your pain!  I too once had 3 flats during collegiate national championships!  Needless to say I ran out of tubes and CO2 as well and was pulled off the course.  Turns out I had a thorn in my tire that I hadn't felt when replacing the three flats.  I ended up getting new tires much to my chagrin.  Way to stick with it!

Oh, 12 hours - now that's an idea.

I also wondered about the possibility of 12 hours vs. 8 hours, but
then thought about lighting. An 8 hour race doesn't require the extra
investment in lighting, even if the start time (10 am vs. 8 am) and
start date (Sept 20 vs Sept 1) are pushed later. A 12 hour race
requires lighting - if only for an hour or two.

Maybe that's not the reason Ian came up with the 8 hour time limit,
but it's the reason I would. My 2 cents.
