This is to inform you that we are once again summoned tomorrow (Tuesday March 22) at 10:00 am, by the criminal investigation service following the lawsuit filed by Amal Movement against “the authors of the report entitled: arbitrary detention and torture: the bitter reality of Lebanon” – a lawsuit that claims among other things that the report contains false accusations, defamation and insults, and represents an incitement to sectarian strife.

Subject: Summons of CLDH representatives - follow-up
Dear colleagues and friends in Lebanon and abroad,
First and foremost we would like to express our extreme gratitude to all the organizations and individuals who expressed their solidarity with CLDH.
We went at morning, accompanied by a number of NGOs representatives and lawyers, to the summons that was conveyed to us on Monday by the criminal investigation service at the Ministry of Justice. Upon our arrival, we were informed that the officer was absent “for personal reasons”, that no one was in a position to investigate us, and that we would have to come another day. Asked about official documents mentioning the reasons of the summons, the officers declared that they were not in a position to give us any document and that we should request them at the prosecutor’s office.
At the prosecutor’s office, in spite of several lawyers’ efforts, no document was given to us. We were only informed that “Amal Movement”, represented by two lawyers filed a lawsuit against “the authors of the report entitled: arbitrary detention and torture: the bitter reality of Lebanon” claiming among other things that it contains false accusations, defamation and insults, and represents an incitement to sectarian strife.
We are now waiting to see if the authorities are going to summon us again for investigation. If this happens, we will let you know immediately.
Thanks again to all of you for your solidarity. These intimidation measures reminds us how fragile is our freedom and how much we have to stand united and continue to denounce all the human rights violations in Lebanon, including the most severe cases, whether the authorities like it or not.
Kind regards,
Marie DAUNAY – Wadih AL ASMAR

We had thought that the era of intimidation, of justice instrumentalisation perpetrated against Human rights defenders in Lebanon was now history.
But on March 14, two representatives of CLDH (Lebanese Center for Human Rights) were notified that they are requested to present themselves to the criminal investigation service in Beirut on Thursday the 17th of March at 10 am.
A complaint is believed to have been filed by Amal movement lawyers in relation with the publication, on February 10, of a report entitled : « Arbitrary detention and torture : the bitter reality of Lebanon ». The report presents an innovative study on the patterns of arbitrary detention and torture in Lebanon, based on statistical data, testimonies and interviews.
We will continue documenting the violations that are perpetrated against the people and revealing the truth.
Today, we need the support of all the human rights defenders community to show the Lebanese authorities that no intimidation can stop the crucial work we are all carrying out to make Lebanon a better place.
