Converting youTube to mp3

I like to walk and listen to podcasts. I'm so used to that I really can't sit still in front of the desktop computer and listen to an hour long youTube interview.

What I'd like is to move the URL of the youTube to some website and have it give me the audio version of that.

Google even suggests such a website, but it has been hijacked. And in fact you put into Google "convert youTube to mp3" and you get dozen of solutions and the several I tried had unbelievable amount of words and pictures describing something that requires no words at all. The more words, I guess, the more legitimate looking it is. That's when I figured out, they all frauds. Or rather ways to load shit on your computer. I didn't click on any start, but just entering their domain has the lower right corner of my screen reminding me to obtain their virus protection. An endless parade of them.

Does anyone know a real place that is un-hijacked for this simple conversion?

I would think VLC would work for this however never tried it

I use it to convert other formats

I don't use google for searching until after I try duckduckgo and fail.

I tried ddg.gg and immediately found https://mp3-convert.org/v8/

It looks like it is simple and should work.

There is a GitHub project called YouTube-dl that does everything you want and more

Thanks Gary,
YouTube-dl requires hosting in Python.  That is over my head.  From there "youtube-mp3.com" was recommended, and that no longer exists.

VLC might be the ticket. I found this:
How to Convert Video to Audio (Mp3) using VLC

1. Click on Media > Convert/Save [CTRL + R].
2. Click on Add.
3. Browse and open your video file.
4. Click on Convert/Save.
5. Under Settings, in Profile choose Audio – MP3.
6. Hit Browse and give a destination file name with the extension ending in . mp3.
7. Click Start.

I'll give it a try.

another vote for youtube-dl

It "Just works(tm)"

run it against the youtube (or many other video streams) with -x and it'll only save the audio.

youtube-dl -x "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnkTuHP9q3o"

(note the quotes)

Then a quick:

ffmpeg -i <filename>.m4a <filename>.mp3 

to convert to mp3

And no risk of 'hijacked' sites or un-expected downloads behind the scenes.

I'll also add a vote for youtube-dl. Just be sure to update it about
once a month (or if it stops working); YouTube has a habit of making
changes that can break it.
