I came across this setup today while doing some searching. It's not cheap but it's quiet, fast, and can lift 700 lbs.

Nice looking, but $875? You ain't kidding they are proud of these things. Or there must be a material shortage, heh heh.  And sure, 700lbs is a lot. It looks like you'd also need a metal frame to attach the legs to, then place the desktop onto the metal frame. I say that because the side load on the full length of the leg is carried by the screws in that little plate. The needed metal frame would also support the span of the desktop.

We've got to design a nice looking 'bedframe, rollerblade wheels, and arduino' edition.

Was looking into using counterweights instead of having to use some electric or hand crank method to raise and lower the desk and I came across the video below. It uses a nitrogen charges variable gas strut to help with the lifting. It also has a set of metal bands that keep the legs in sync.
