Hello fellow Bed Stuy Meadow'ers!
This list has been pretty quiet since its inception, and I hope this is a welcome wake-up song:
I am writing to you - my neighbors and a group of local community leaders engaged in sustainable neighborhood development - to make sure that you all are aware of the new food co-op opening (~ June 2011) on Putnam Ave between Classon and Grand: the
Green Hill Food Coop.
The Coop is in a position where they really need to build their member base, get the word out, and get the community involved. I think this is a great opportunity, not only for selfish reasons, but for our neighborhood.
Case in point: I learned some nice things at their community meeting last night --> Top on the list being that there is a significant membership development effort being made to include our neighborhood's many low-income members. I had noticed that the Coop will be accepting EBT, and offers a graduated equity plan for all income levels, but I wasn't aware how seriously they were taking this. The steering members made it very clear that they don't want the Coop to be just another yuppie enclave (my words, not theirs). I think that this is usually the worry with a social / business effort like this one.
Anyway, check out the coop, consider joining, and getting involved. It's going to be great. Here is a short message from their website:
We
are starting a new 100% working, member-owned food coop to provide
affordable, quality, responsibly-grown food within our neighborhoods of
Clinton Hill/Fort Greene, Brooklyn, New York. Our goals are also based on the guiding principles of diversity and community. All are welcome!
