I have attached several successful wildflower plantings that I promote in my landscaping business starting almost 20 years ago.
The past couple of years developers as well as homeowners understand and want more susatinable landscapes.

FYI the ReLeaf NY conference will be in Brooklyn July 16-18. Some great programs.. take a look at the conference website www.treesny.com

I just saw my first evidence of wildflowers in one vacant lot on Gates
and Nostrand this morning.

Honestly, the tree pits and most vacant lots I've had my eye on have
been disappointing so far. Makes sense, there's been mowing in some
lots, a lot of aggressive knotweed in others, the soil in many of the
tree pits near my house anyway appears to be sterile.

Even if this one lot is the only thing that blooms in all Bed Stuy, I
am interested in the way the meadow has been making me look and
explore more. It's been giving me a reason to go peer into lots and
examine tree pits. That seems like a good thing, but not an end in
itself. More like a beginning. A first step.

I took some pictures last night and put them up on the blog:

http://www.bedstuyblog.com/2009/06/23/bed-stuy-blossoms/

I don't know for sure that ALL of these flowers result for the meadow
planting but it's all in the same spirit.

Amazing how much beauty you see when you start to look.

Hey everyone,

I started a flickrpool. Parts of Bed Stuy are really starting to pop!

http://www.flickr.com/groups/1165777@N21/pool/

It's interesting, some parts of the neighborhood are not showing
anything. I think that this is because much of the neighborhood is
under excellent care. Weeds get pulled, even vacant lots occasionally
get mowed, etc.

But I haven't been on time to work in awhile because I keep finding
new flowers without even walking out of my way. Take a walk through
the neighborhood and see what you find!

(If all goes as planned today, I'll also be posting an identification
guide on the flickrpool)...
