I have just come off of a year teaching freshman English for the first
time in my Oakland school, along with a semester-long Media Studies
course to sophomores and advising the newspaper. Next year, I will be
teaching three sections of a year-long Journalism I course, which will
be required for all of our freshmen, and the newspaper class. I want
to work with the ELA teacher to blend our curriculum and also to
develop journalism units that all freshman ELA teachers could use
throughout Oakland. I am excited to see some of the lessons you have
already developed!

Now, if I can only get the district to help work out the problem with
Google Docs ... it never works on our computers ... I might be able to
use many of them the way they were designed to be used. Also, do you
know how to take care of the problems of having YouTube blocked if I
want to show some of the Google videos you include in your lessons?

I am going to be honest about my disappointment on one front -- I was
surprised to see so many typos in the lessons, given the stellar work
that Paly teachers do. Almost every lesson I looked at needed a
proofreader. Do you want us to tell you about the mistakes we see?

Hi Lisa,
Thank you so much for your feedback. Sorry about all the typos and yes, you should tell me where the typos are if you remember.  I will go over the resources again with some of my interns.   I had some grad students at Stanford working with me and they were supposed to checking for spelling but clearly they missed a lot of them.

I would be happy to give you some advice for getting Docs to work in the classroom. What kinds of problems were you having?  Perhaps we should talk on the phone about this issue.

Best regards,

Esther

As for the YouTube videos and being blocked by the district.  That is a common problem and YouTube is working on meeting district requirements so it will not be blocked. It is really a great teaching tool.
