I have recently been contacted by numerous employers asking for
verification of my certification of certain individuals as Blackbelts
and Master Blackbelts. All but one of these individuals had the
audacity to indicate that I certified them...and it was my obligation
to set the organizations straight. People may have studied under
me...but that is as far as it went...

My advice to these companies after saying "NO! I did not and would
not certify them" was to have them ask for an original certificate.
If it didn't have my authorizing signature on it...I did not certify
them...and if they studied under me and I have not certified
them...there was a reason for me not doing so...

It is a hard line to take...but I believe in integrity and
honesty...competence and wisdom...hard work and measurable sustained
results...lack any of those and you are not certifiable in my
book...The credibility of the Process Improvement profession rests on
that consistent behavior...I will not compromise and add to an already
compromised and questionable science.

There are certain criteria that needs to be met in order to claim ANY
level of competence...and accurate representation of one's level of
competence is as important...claiming to be something you are not is a
lie...pure and simple...riding on my reputation is self-serving and it
will definitely come back to haunt you...

If you have a certificate from some correspondence course...proudly
present that certificate...

If you took a few of my classes...then that is the most that you can
claim...

Stop!

Phil,

I certainly understand your angst and dissapointment at getting such calls.   For the record, I have never used you as a source of my certifications.  Dayton Warfle/Jack Welch of GE and John Murphy/Mike McGovern/Fred Favorite of CSX were the folks who rendered certification upon me.  While we worked together on projects, none were used in support of my certification.  I trust these contacts did not come on my behalf.  Although one day, I hope to received one of the first DMADD certifications on the books.

Best Regards,

Rick

Not you my friend!

Many are claiming certifications...and have not gone through the
important hoops...

I am getting MANY requests for verifications on BBs and MBBs! It is
weird!

These are people who don't even have an elementary understanding of
statistics...or a successful deployment under their proverbial belt!

One can not call themselves a successful BB without 5 GREAT
projects...or a successful MBB without a successful deployment AND at
least 20 successfully mentored projects.

Then there is the test...most of these people go, "HUH? I never took
a test!"

I have even seen forged certificates...that is why I am guiding the
organizations to ask for the originals...

The things people go through to feint competency...if they put half
the effort into working diligently...they would be successful...

Chalk up another one for immediate gratification!

I would hate to see a cheap forgery hung on my surgeon's wall!
