Good afternoon, I am writing to express my wholehearted support for Sheffield Council's plans to make the majority of Sheffield City Centre a legally binding 20mph maximum speed area.
This is an an area which is increasingly populated by residents living in City Centre developments, workers in new office blocks and small businesses, and ever more people are simply taking advantage of the increasing number of leisure/eating establishments and events like street markets.
Sheffield has also experienced significant increases in 'Active Travel' modes (Walking and Cycling - see Sheffield City Region
Transport Strategy 2011-2026, section 4) and more importantly Sheffield Council has high aspirations to increase these levels much further, reducing congestion and pollution, improving our individual, economic and social health.
Reducing vehicle speeds, and with that the associated anxiety experienced by those choosing to travel otherwise than in a vehicle, will play a major part in Sheffield's transition to a more pleasant and vibrant city where more people feel confident to try Active Travel options for appropriate journeys.
