We support Sheffield Council's plans to make the majority of Sheffield City Centre a legally binding 20mph maximum speed area, joining those areas of Sheffield already benefiting from 20mph status.

The city centre is an area which is increasingly populated by residents living in City Centre developments, workers in new office blocks and small businesses, and ever more people are simply taking advantage of the increasing number of leisure/eating establishments and events like street markets.

Sheffield has also experienced significant increases in 'Active Travel' modes (Walking and Cycling) and Sheffield Council has high aspirations to increase these levels much further, thereby reducing congestion and pollution, and improving our individual, economic and social health.

Reducing vehicle speeds, and with that the associated anxiety experienced by those choosing to travel otherwise than in a vehicle, will play a major part in Sheffield's transition to a yet more pleasant, healthy and economically vibrant city where more people can feel confident to try Active Travel options for those journeys and circumstances where a vehicle is not essential.

Hi Richard,

Looks good to me.  The only thing I would revise is where you  mention “high aspirations to increase these levels much further”.  There used to be a target of journeys to work in the city centre reaching 10% by a certain date but this has effectively been abandoned as has the cycle strategy that was once promised.

Regards,

Douglas
