If you're a registered voter, your ballot should have arrived by now. Is it still sitting in a pile of mail? Not to worry! Bring it along to TRU's two-night Voting Extravaganza next Monday or Tuesday, meet candidates, enjoy drink specials, hear a comedy set from Brett Hamil (who also does some great political commentary), and vote! We'll be collecting ballots to take to a dropbox, and there will be stamps if you prefer to put your ballot in the mail yourself. And if you've already voted, come hang out anyway! The program will start around 8, and candidates making appearances include Kshama Sawant, Jon Grant, and Michael Maddux (all of whom have earned TRU's endorsement).

RSVP on Facebook here, or just show up. And if you can't make it, remember to vote by August 4!

Monday, July 27, 7pm - close @ The Neighbor Lady Bar, 2308 E. Union St.

Tuesday, July 28, 7pm - 10pm @ Vermillion Gallery & Bar, 1508 11th Ave

Making Fare Enforcement Fair for Youth

This Tuesday, King County Councilmember Dave Upthegrove introduced legislation that would make the consequences of not paying bus fare less dire for youth. The legislation would require a court order to bar a youth from the bus for more than twelve hours; prevent Metro from filing criminal charges on a youth for fare evasion; and address the fact that, right now, riders have to travel to Shoreline to challenge tickets for fare evasion. Real Change has the scoop, and you can read the legislation here.

Many transit riders are forced into fare evasion by poverty. Not paying a bus fare should never be an entrance to the criminal justice system for youth. Being banned from public transit is serious hardship for people with no other transportation options, as is having to travel to Shoreline to challenge tickets for fare evasion. That's why the Transit Riders Union strongly supports this legislation, as a good step towards making fare enforcement more equitable. Please contact your representative on the county council and tell them to pass this legislation without delay!
