I would like to discuss different interpretations of ethical consumerism. If you're interested, please fill out
this doodle poll.
My interest in this discussion comes from reading
Doing Good Better, which is mostly a run-of-the-mill effective altruism book. In one chapter, though, the author nicely summarizes a few challenges to the typical organic/fair trade/local conception of ethical consumerism. For example, he talks about sweatshop jobs being better than the other available jobs in certain countries and there being more effective ways of reducing greenhouse gas emissions than buying local/organic food.
I've heard some of these ideas before, which challenge a lot of the choices that I make, but never taken the time time to think about them carefully and discuss them. I think it would be nice to do that in a group setting. The chapter I described is attached.
Feel free to invite others.
Best,
