LAND studio seeks up to two staff members who are excited to enhance the urban environment through planning, promotion, and activation of public spaces. Working directly with Cleveland residents and organizational partners, the selected candidate(s) will serve as staff support in the development of public space and artwork installation initiatives throughout public settings in Cleveland neighborhoods.

The Project Manager will oversee the planning and implementation of projects. They will collaborate with LAND colleagues, partners, funders, and designers in the planning, development, and execution of a range of projects. The ideal candidates for this position will work well independently and, on a team, seek creative solutions to project challenges, create and manage budgets, and keep the goal of delivering projects at the highest level and with the best collaboration possible.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

In this role, the PROJECT MANAGER will manage day-to-day project logistics on individual projects and act as the front line for interaction with community stakeholders, project partners, and creative professionals.

Specific duties may include but are not limited to:

Project Planning & Development

Ensures that projects and programs are executed with the highest quality results

Participates in the creation and development of new projects and programs

Research new talent and builds relationships with artists, designers, and fabricators to ensure all projects are created to the highest possible standards

Willingness to learn and grow an in-depth knowledge of fabrication methods and materials to act as a liaison between artists, designers, and builders

Develops strategies for convening selection committees and juries for project competitions

Engages in the creative processes with artists, designers, and fabricators

Manages the work of and communication among project partners, including artists, design professionals, fabricators and other contractors, businesses, nonprofit organizations, and government entities

Develops project-specific calls for artists, requests for proposals or qualifications (RFPs or RFQs), and scope of work documents

Presents artwork, artists, and projects for approval by city review bodies and other entities as necessary

Assembles and convenes project-specific advisory groups

Develops and maintains project budgets, timelines, and workflow

Other Duties

· Provide regular updates to LAND studio’s staff and supervisor about project milestones, project growth opportunities, and content for outreach and other communications vehicles as requested

· Strategizes with colleagues to identify potential funding sources for specific projects

· Participates, as requested, in organizational fundraising activities and events.

· Supporting program, marketing, and development staff in a variety of capacities

· Assisting with proposals and grant requests

· Assisting with public art installations

· Creating project presentations

· Daily communication with staff leadership

· Regular project and administrative tasks that could include, but are not limited to working with contracts, completing timesheets, and payables, etc.

QUALITIES + EXPERIENCE

Demonstrated commitment to racial equity + inclusion

Proficiency with Windows 11, PowerPoint, Adobe and related programs

Interest in urban neighborhoods and public art is desirable, but not required

Previous experience working in public-facing roles, even if they are outside of this field is desirable

THE DETAILS

Position type: Full-time, salaried

Reports to: Senior Project Management Team

Salary range: $50,000-$75,000, commensurate on position and experience. Negotiable.

Location: Flexible mix of work in the LAND office + remotely. In-office and remote hybrid, currently fully remote due to COVID-19 pandemic. Project management will also require local and regional travel to projects and on-site work.

Job Description

POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Sustainability Manager will play a key leadership role in setting and implementing campus sustainability policy, practices, and initiatives to promote Case Western Reserve University as a leader in the field. They will work to enhance the educational value and engagement opportunities of campus and community sustainability initiatives. They will develop, assess and communicate the feasibility of new sustainability initiatives and measure initiative effectiveness. The manager will oversee many Office programs, such as campus sustainability benchmarking and greenhouse gas reporting; the sustainability ambassador internship program; recycling data collection, communications, and education; the green bag lunch series and other special events; social media and communications accounts and newsletters; and other behavioral change campaigns and initiatives. They will serve as the lead administrator for several sustainability campus and community committees. The manager will engage with the administration, faculty, staff, students, and external community members on ways to maximize the sustainability, resilience and environmental performance of Case Western Reserve University. The manager will often serve as one of the designated university representatives to the wider community, enhancing CWRU’s connection to and engagement with local, regional and national sustainability initiatives.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Manage the implementation of a visible and effective university-wide recycling program to meet sustainability goals and standards.  Promote cooperation and understanding across the university of recycling and waste stream minimization goals, process, and protocol. Serve as a resource for university departments on sustainability and zero waste initiatives and events and enlist cooperative support as needed from the campus community. Collaborate institution-wide to ensure materials management standards are implemented and department-level needs are met. Create and deliver effective education materials and training modules for a variety of departments and stakeholders. Draw linkages between waste minimization and the Climate Action Plan and university sustainability goals. Track and publicly report on recycling & waste metrics and performance trends monthly and annually. Set-up a new system within the division to ensure annual audits of recycling signage, bin placement, cleaning, and replacement. Create a new University recycling policy with stakeholder support. Collaborate with partners and track data on the annual end of year Rescycle, student move out donation program. Lead composting efforts on campus and the communications with program partners including Bon Appetit, the University Farm staff and the external supporting vendor. Recommend modifications to improve overall program effectiveness and assess potential expansion opportunities. Regularly communicate and network with waste and recycling vendors and community subject matter experts. (20%)
  2. Lead student outreach channels, including the sustainability ambassador program, the sustainability house residential programming, and collaborate with several student sustainability clubs and special research projects. Oversee the Office’s Sustainability Ambassador Internship program & Sustainability House paid student coordinators, managing 12-20 students. Find unique projects for students to meaningfully create campus sustainability initiatives and campaigns. Help students collaborate with internal and external departments and groups. Create effective student leaders and programming that attracts future participants. Develop programs to drive interaction opportunities with the campus community, students, staff and faculty on a wide range of sustainable issues to gather feedback, encourage engagement, foster new sustainability programming ideas and develop collaborative partnerships. Also recruit, interview and manage office support and communications and marketing student interns, and ensure they are performing work with well-defined deliverables. (20%)
  3. Lead annual sustainability and climate data collection and metric reporting such as for AASHE STARS, GHG Inventory, Tree Campus USA certification, LEED certification data needs, etc. (20%)
  4. Develop and maintain an array of communications and outreach tools and strategies that promotes to the internal and external community broad awareness of sustainability initiatives, goals and performance including writing the office newsletters, creating Web content, updating CampusGroups, creating social media content, other articles, proposals, reports, metrics, and educational and training materials. Work with department and campus partners to develop and carry out educational campaigns to increase sustainability initiative participation and an understanding of achievements and desired behavior. (15%)
  5. Provide counsel and analysis on a broad range of strategic and tactical initiatives related to achieving the university’s Climate Action Plan and sustainability goals. Develop project proposals and implementation plans that result in the adoption of new or improved sustainable policies, practices, and standards by the university. Conduct research on grant funding, prepare grant applications, and manage grant deliverables as directed. Monitor overall sustainability program success, make recommendations, and implement necessary changes. Maintain a working knowledge of best practices at peer institutions. (10%)

 

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Serve as a liaison to relevant government offices, civic organizations, and private agencies regarding university sustainability programs, and facilitate presentations for special groups. (5%)
  2. Manage the office’s event, giveaway, communications, supply, and IT equipment budget. (5%)
  3. Attend campus and community events, table for the office, and coordinate office representation when not available, help recruit Zero Waste event volunteers, etc. (1%)
  4. Support the organization and maintenance of the physical office environment, office supplies and inventory of giveaways and event supplies. (1%)
  5. Order sustainable giveaways and student and staff prizes and gifts. (1%)
  6. Participate in other department’s committees on behalf of the office as requested. (1%)
  7. Perform other duties as assigned. (1%)

 

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with director, administrative staff, student interns and division staff.

University: Weekly contact with directors of Facilities Services, Planning Design & Construction, and the managers of Custodial Services and Grounds. Frequent contact with a wide variety of university staff, faculty and students. Moderate contact with senior administration and academic leaders.

External: Moderate contact with local, regional and national government offices, civic groups and higher education colleagues as well as relevant university vendors.

Students: Frequent collaboration with student groups, student government and resident students.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

There will be no current, direct supervision of FTE staff, but this position will supervise a minimum of 12 student employees annually (interns and graduate fellows) as well as advising relevant undergraduate or graduate organizations/clubs.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 

- 5 or more years of work experience in the field of sustainability or one that is very closely related and preferably for a higher education or similar institution.
- Experience working on topics such as recycling/waste minimization, green buildings, energy efficiency, climate change mitigation, or closely related initiatives.
- Project management, website and newsletter communications, experience working with college age students and/or event planning in this field strongly preferred.

- Education/licensing: Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, sustainability, or a related field, master’s degree preferred. 

- Must have a valid Ohio driver’s license.

 REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Ability to work effectively with teams to build consensus toward common goals.
  2. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  3. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.
  4. Must be able to relate well with diverse individuals and to motivate them to participate in initiatives such as recycling and other behavior change campaigns.
  5. Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communications skills; comfort and experience with public speaking and tailoring presentations for different audiences.
  6. Excellent organizational skills; detail-oriented with emphasis on accuracy and quality.
  7. Ability to work under general direction with minimal supervision, dependable in follow-through, mature problem-solving skills.
  8. Ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks, work with shifting priorities and schedules, meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  9. Experience with project management from conception to conclusion, and project delivery on deadline.
  10. Knowledgeable about the broad field of sustainability and recycling trends and related higher education best practices.
  11. Experience with Microsoft Office, especially PowerPoint and Excel, Web content management programs and social media.
