53.4 Infantry may move off wire in the Movement Phase. Each unit leaving the wire rolls one die and pays the resulting MF penalty. However, exiting units may always move at least one hex. ...All units must have sufficient MF to carry any support weapons in excess of their normal portage capability or they leave those weapons behind.  Any unit whose MF die roll exceeds its movement capability cannot carry any support weapons off the wire hex.

Q:  After declaring intent to move off the wire and then rolling a high enough MF penalty that a unit would have to leave support weapons behind, may the unit cancel its intended movement off the wire and remain in the wire hex  ( and in possession of its support weapons)?  Or must it move off the wire as declared and leave its weapons behind?

Logically I think a unit should be able to cancel its declared movement so as to maintain possession of its weapons; it is in effect struggling to get out of / through the wire.

If you roll, then the units are expending MF and moving off the wire.  They can advance back into the wire hex.  Also, they go CX if expending more than 4 MF (6 moving with a leader).

Ahhh  that's true, they could just move right back onto the wire in the Advance Phase in order to retrieve their weapons.  Which seems silly but that would address the problem of leaving all your weapons behind.
