Hello Everyone,
I have limited internet access this summer but since I have I thought I should take this opportunity to introduce myself. I am Michèle. I just finished a degree in psychology at the University of Ottawa, so I am very excited to be heading back there in style (on our bikes) and finishing up the tour there. I am currently working in Northern (technically mid) Ontario in a small town named Gogama about an hour south of Timmins. I work at an Ontario Ranger camp with 16 and 17 year old girls, organizing and supervising work projects for them, mostly all about natural resources. That being said, as Canadians we are very fortunate to have an abundance of freshwater as a natural resource. On canoe trips we generally pump or treat our water, but in very special cases we just dip our nalgenes into the water and drink straight from the lake, with some worry of disease, but when you think about, we really have very littel to worry about on a big clear lake with no beaver dams in sight.
On that note, to keep with Lindsay's lingo, I am coming from the circus! I was originally signed up for the food tour, where a little bit more of a knowledge lies, but I am equally excited to be joining all of you and learning a whole more about water issues in this country, especially because they are rarely at the forefront of discussion, because we have so little to worry about. My major water concerns are not getting enough rain and snow through out the year meaning that the water table is low and canoe trip routes during the summer are limited and somewhat more difficult. I am really interested, as Lindsay mentioned in a recent email, to talk about water in relation to food and local food.
In terms of food for myself, I am very low maintenance when it comes to food. I have no dietary restrictions and have no qualms with taking on any type of diet for the tour. I look forward to hearing more from everyone and to talking to you all on July 18th!
Sunshine and happy riding!
