Dear Registrar,
I would like to update you on several issues regarding the registration of
MPH. When I got into office last two months, I met with MMED, PhD and MPH
students and/or their representatives. Among the issues that we discussed
was the need to register each and every year. I believe this initiative has
resulted in many students registering. Some continue to be unregistered
though. In my discussions with the graduate sttudents and their
representatives, I emphasized that I would find it problematic to deal with
unregistered students whatever the reasons (as unregistered students, are
not students at all). There was no exception as to whether one was
NAC-funded or not. I have broken this rule several times but from now on, I
intend not to attend to students who are not registered, unless the issue
under discussion is the registration itself.
From the MPH students, the message from the representatives was that some
(not all) the students had been delayed based on several reasons, ranging
from: delays in having proposals reviews; COMREC delays; and other matters.
My discussion with the MPH management is that there appears to be many
reasons some beyond the control of the department, some under the control
of, and some on the students' side of things. The students indicated that
for those whom we have 'delayed', there should have their extension fees
waived. I believed this was a legitimate request but emphasized that there
can never be a blanket request. An MPH student who desirews to have the USD
140 fee waiver should ask for it and submit supporting documents, e.g.
proposal was sent to the programme in 2011 and feedback was in 2013. When
such a request comes, the department will need to advise as to whether the
claim is substantiated. I am yet to receive any report to substantiate
anyone's claim.
My writing, which is to Registry Staff, The MPH programme and Students'
Representative, is to put on record what I have discussed with the students
and what I believe can be a fair way of dealing with the students.
This email is for information.
