I was fascinated that the angel sent as a messenger of God against Sodom and Gomorrah had authority to grant Lot's requests, change the instructions, etc. This messenger was an ambassador who represented the father. God entrusted the mission into the angel's hands and left at least some of the details up to the angel.

I have had a cold this week and my routine has been disrupted so I am off schedule with the readings. One of my favorite chapters in Mark in Mk 11, the cursing of the fig tree. Mark has a characteristic writing style where he "sandwiches" stories together interlocking them and forcing them to interpret each other. In Mk 11 we have a story of a showy fig tree interlocked with the religious practice of Jerusalem combined with an underlying question of legitimate authority. All of this, I think also has Ezekiel 47 in the background. Join us Sunday night for a lively discussion.
