As I read Gen 1-2 I was struck by the fact that the story of Adam naming the animals and the creation of Eve provides a context for understanding the idea of "helper." As I read it the context is about the idea of what kind of being is "suitable" as a life partner, suitable for companionship and suitable for procreation. All the other animals that Adam names are unsuitable, until he sees Eve and knows that she is the perfect match.

In Genesis, when the serpent says "your eyes will be opened" it was not a lie, they were opened and they did become like God what he told them was true...what was not true about the serpents suggestion was the motive assigned to God's command. The serpent assumed that God was keeping them from something good because so that God could protect his unique status as God. As the story unfolds it becomes clear that God's motive was to protect Adam and Eve from knowledge of good and evil for their own well being.

My favorite verse this week was Mark 1:35 "Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed."
