cordially invites you to a lecture
Towards a Science and Technology of Consciousness

by

Matthijs Cornelissen, MD
Indian Psychology Institute, Pondicherry, India

20 March 2013 (Wednesday)
Time : 5-45 pm to 7-30 pm
Seminar Hall, IIT Delhi

About the talk
Over the last few years, ‘Mindfulness’ has become an increasingly popular
technique in counseling and therapy, and it is now a core element in
self-help and the promotion of psychological well-being. There is plenty
of scientific evidence that it works, but how does it work? Is there a way
to study the underlying processes? How are we to explain our inner
subjective experience, the meaning of our lives, the origin of values,
inner knowledge, the effectiveness of mindfulness? To explore these
questions we need rigorous subjectivity, and a deep and solid
understanding of consciousness, but how should we develop these? Is it
possible to develop not only a true science of consciousness, but also a
technology of consciousness, just as we now have both a science and a
technology of matter? That we need such a science is hardly open to doubt,
because all major problems humanity is facing at present, both
individually and collectively, are ultimately psychological, but how are
we going to do it? In this interactive lecture, we’ll focus on these
questions and on the rigorous subjectivity they would require in a spirit
of collaborative enquiry.
