I'm on a bit of a searching bender looking for the first 2 Tone
stamped sleeve (anyone????) and found some stuff on ebay maybe of
interest to you folks:

Specials 1st Japan Promo Vinyl LP OBI 2 Tone Terry Hall for US$50.
Inner sleeve and obe included. (Why do people care about the obi
anyway???)

and the same for the Selecter's first LP WITH press release ( a
completist's wet dream perhaps?). Also 50 bones:

THE 2 TONE STORY - Cassette Artwork - (The Specials) (If this was for
a vinyl item not a casette I'd be all over it!):

I'm a purist, so I like OBIs. I think this came from my first two Japanese
purchases being Madness records when I was a kid. The OBIs had nice artwork,
which was in addition to the stuff on the sleeve, so it just made it that
little bit more pleasing.

I'm beginning to regret selling some of my Specials stuff when I was skint
(that comes and goes!). I used to have the stamped sleeve. Ironically the
part of my massive Terry Hall collection which is really lacking and has
loads of holes in it is The Specials, the band he is most famous for being
in. Now they've been touring again it's highly unlikely I'll ever be able to
afford to fill the many gaps. Well not without selling my near complete Viz
Comic collection!

Cheers

Viz's have value? I just had a friend grab an annual for me while she
was back in the UK. I was sadly disappointed at how unfunny it was. I
think it was too early (Annual 1 or 2) because it didn't even have the
Fat Slags in it yet.

And I do think the 2 Tone 'new' prices are here to stay but you know
what? It's worth it. Its good sh*t. Look at the value of some of this
punk stuff that is completely based on its obscurity but not whats in
the grooves. That first 2 Tone release is revolutionary in music. Very
few Independent releases have and will have that much of an impact on
popular music AND popular culture. On the top of my head all I can
compare it to is the Sex pistols but that is such a cliche now I'm not
even sure its true anymore. Maybe Grand Master Flash's 'the Message'
would be one, helping to spark the Hip Hop scene.

Hi David

Yes early Viz comics are valuable. The only early issue I am missing is
issue 2, which recently went for £1300 on eBay. If I'd known it was going to
be that 'cheap' I'd have tried to buy it myself. Mind you it would have
meant going about 3 months into arrears with my rent, so probably not a good
idea! And you are also right that the early ones aren't even all that funny.
It took a while to get going, but when it did it was hilarious. To be honest
with you I think it is as funny now as it was when it was selling 1,000,000
copies per issue 20 years ago. It's moved on a hell of a lot, but still has
enough of its old irreverent style left to make it 100% Viz even though none
of the original writers are still with it. However it is only the first 10
or so issues that have the value, with the exception of one or two later
special editions.

When we question the prices on the 2Tone stuff, it is often the obscure,
sometimes rubbish records which attract the highest prices. Or at least the
ones we pour scorn on. I have to admit that as soon as I saw what you could
get for a Friday Club 7" or a JB's All Stars 12" or the dreadful Ghost Town
revisited, they all went on eBay as I wanted to cash in on stuff just
gathering dust. If I could pick them up again for a tenner each I would
(there's always an unsuspecting record shop owner somewhere has something on
their shelves they've not checked the value of). I'd get home and put them
straight on eBay. Mind you to put this in perspective the last time it
happened to me was about 4 or 5 years back and did involve a lot of driving
and me being in a record shop purely passing time before I went to a gig.
It's not something that will ever pay off my debts, let alone make me a
living.

I have the 2 tone collection about 5 times over Including all UK
pressings, Irish, Plastic, Plastic Reissues and large chunk of Foreign
Issues. so if I ever had to sell up for whatever reason I would keep
all the UK releases and sell the rest. only yesterday I got an Irish
Pressing of The Specials 1st LP on Chrysalis that I have been after
forever but I have it now and all I had to give in exchange was a DVD
with some recent Madness TV clips. so I think I did ok there because
you can find almost every Specials Import on Ebay these days but if
you are after an Irish pressing forget abaout it. I also have More
Specials, Dance Craze and Too much Pressure (Cassette only)

I reckon a lot of people simply didn't know about Irish pressings or took
them for granted, whilst being off looking for records from other locations.
I only ever remember having a few Irish Madness pressings when I had about
700 Madness records/CDs/tapes etc.

Do you know of many Irish only releases from the stuff we collect? I know I
used to concentrate mainly on singles which had different artwork/b sides or
were just completely different to UK single choices when I collected
Madness. I don't remember finding anything which was unique to Ireland.

I just collect them for sentimental reasons there is nothing unique
about any of them apart from The Special aka / war crimes & The
Special aka / Gangsters and a couple of others. The Prince by Madness
is Supposed to have a different ending but only very slight. and Easy
Life by The Bodysnatchers is a different mix but again it's very hard
to tell but it is different. I could go on but I will stop now before
I get to Boring.
