I got my copy of the cd today and I listened to the track Just Do It
and I'm finding it very hard to get my head around the fact that it's
supposed to have nothing to do with the single T'aint What You Do but
you can clearly here the band singing those exact lines during the
song and the music is the same as the afore mentioned track. it would
have been much better if they used the full version that's Available
on 12" black vinyl instead of trying to give people the impression
that it's a different song when it's not. I like the pictures on the
inside sleeve but the red Background is annoying and the sound quality
in general is not very easy on the ears compared to the original EMI
Release from 1996. I said the same thing a while ago regarding the
reissue of Terry Blair & Anouchka (Cherry Red) the Chrysalis version
is much better for sound.

Hi Paul

When this track was supplied by EMI we had many discussions about it. If you
ask for the 12" version of It Ain't What You Do, that is what EMI send. To
make the 12" you would have to tack the album version onto the front of it.
You can do it yourself if you want. If we'd have done it that way you'd have
ended up with the album version on the CD twice. We believe this is why
no-one else has ever released the track 'Just Do It' before, because it
sounds so odd. Also if you look to the 12" sleeve for It Ain't What You Do,
it is listed as a separate track. If EMI had supplied a master of '12" mix
of It Ain't What You Do.../Just Do It' we'd have put it on the CD, but they
didn't so we couldn't. I can assure you that, going on what EMI have in
their vaults Just Do It is a separate track, no matter how odd or strange it
sounds! Even stranger is the fact that if you look at the original 12" the
track Just Do It is credited as written by Golding/Hall/Staples! I agree
with you that there is no way it has nothing to do with It Ain't... which
they clearly didn't write! The whole thing is a mess, but at least now it is
a mess in which you have the track Just Do It on CD, where previously
everyone else has been scared off by it.

As for the red I agree totally. I can't stand red, but that was the scheme
used on the original album. I asked for some text that was in red to be
removed. Thankfully this was done. The extra photos came from my collection,
so I'm glad you like them.

Regards the mastering all I can say is it sounds ok to me, but then I only
have a laptop and my car's CD player to listen on. If I had a proper stereo
and headphones I might have a totally different feeling about the sound.
Again, you can only work with what you are given by the label!

Hopefully I'll get the opportunity to be involved with re-issues of better
albums in future. Having heard it/got it already I hope everyone gets to
love the re-issue of One Step Beyond... For the price that is coming out at
it is a massive bargain. It is well worth buying the book of the same title
that Terry Edwards has written to go with it!

Cheers

Thanks Paul

Here's something I came across today.

UK Chrysalis CHS 12-2570
Released: January 1982
UK chart position: 4

It Ain't What You Do was credited to The Fun Boy Three with
Bananarama, and was their first joint project together, which proved
so succesful that it earnt a silver disc for sales in England and
peaked at #4 in the charts. Inevitably this thrust Bananarama very
quickly into the limelight. The union was so successful, that the Fun
Boy Three offered to co-produce Bananarama's next single which they
had been working on Really Saying Something. It Ain't What You Do was
originally a jazz song performed by trumpeter Sy Oliver back in 1939,
and the Fun Boy Three turned it into a unique blend of ska and pop.

"We couldn't believe the Fun Boy Three wanted us to sing on their
album. They thought we were session singers - very embarrassing! We
loved their music, it was so different to anything else around. We
were living in a squat that was filled with Sid Vicious's old
clothes" (Sarah)

"It would have taken a lot longer had we not met Fun Boy Three because
they were famous, so It Ain't What You Do was guaranteed to get
airplay on British radio. And we knew that. But if we'd never met
them, I'm sure we'd be successful by now in Britain." (Siobhan, 1982).

"They're three really pretty girls. Nice personalities. Sing great as
well" (Lynval, from the Fun Boy Three, 1982)

"We just wanted some girls to sing our songs. And we saw them and we
liked the way they looked. We asked them and it was as simple as
that!" (Terry Hall, Fun Boy Three, 1982)

Written by: Oliver, Young
Produced by: Dave Jordan & Fun Boy Three
Published by: MCA Music
Copyright owned by: Chrysalis Records 1982
Release Summary: Single (1982), Fun Boy Three Fame (1982), Greatest
Hits Collection (1988), The Very Best Of (2001)
Originally Performed by: Sy Oliver (1939)
Reincarnated by: Fun Boy Three & Bananarama, Ella Fitzgerald, Little
Richard, Etta James, Gregory Isaacs, J. Geils Band etc.
Chart Peak: UK #4, Australia #55, New Zealand #37 (6 wks)

The It Ain't What You Do track was originally recorded in late 1981,
and Bananarama contributed vocals to four other songs with the Fun Boy
Three: The Funrama Theme, Santuary, Alone, Life In General (Lewe In
Algemeen).

"Bananarama were as talentless as us, so it was a good reason to get
together. It took them four days to sing three lines, but at least it
was good fun". (Terry Hall)

As far as we know, there are three different versions of It Ain't What
You Do that were originally released by The Fun Boy Three &
Bananarama. The original 7" version is also available on the Greatest
Hits Collection (and various Fun Boy Three compilations). The 12"
features only one remix which features on all 12" prints, and is not
available on CD. The other remix is available on the Fun Boy Three
debut album, which was originally self-titled, but reissued on CD
entitled "Fame". The album version differs from the 7" version and the
ending is segued into the next track by the sound of sped-up tape.

Bananarama Versions (Total Duration: 11:43)
1. It Ain't What You Do (7" Single Version) 2:47 (CD)
2. It Ain't What You Do (Extended 12" Version) 5:55
3. It Ain't What You Do (Album Version) 3:01 (CD)

Why don't you try and get a Colourfield best of released. if EMI won't
reissue the studio albums they might consider some kind of
Collection.

I never saw this email from you until today. I've just been sent the CD that
was sent from Abbey Road Studios, which is the one all the controversy is
about. Your info is very interesting and it's good to see all the quotes.

I'll be sending a set of scans into the forum if I can work out how to
upload them, but the long and short of it is this is what Dermot James
(named in the credits as re-issued co-ordinator or something similar- anyway
it's his project!) was sent as the so called 12" of It Ain't. If you get a
chance to listen to all the versions you will see (hopefully) and hear that
our assessment of the tracks is correct and that the discogs thing below is
very slightly wrong.

Cheers

PS Still fingers crossed re The Colour Field, although I'm getting pins and
needles now!

Hi

The uploads are in the files section, titled Two Tracks Just Do It. There
are 3. Not much to look at, but they are the CD as produced by Abbey Road in
request for the 12" of the two catalogue numbers.

That is true. I've got a reference copy of the whole album from the
mastering studio too. Probably worth nothing, but nice to have as I know
there are is only one copy of it. Normally Dermot throws these things away
once a CD has been issued by Cherry Red as they are just clutter to him!

I suppose that is how years later things turn up from the 60s that are
incredibly rare. Someone at the record company or pressing plant saved
things from the skip!

It's amazing to think that if you're in the right position of power you
could contact Abbey Road and get them to sort you out a Beatles disc with
your own chosen track listing, including unreleased mixes! I somehow think
that would be worth a tiny bit more money than a FB3 one!!!!

I'm pretty sure it was my mate Dave who sold the Pauline Black unreleased
stuff. I know he had some unreleased songs of hers a while ago.

I guess I've still got some 2Tone stuff I'd be tempted to sell if the rent
needed paying. I think maybe it is time to dust down my whole collection and
see if any of it is fetching dosh on eBay. I'd rather it gathered me some
money than the dust it currently attracts!
