And it looks like very early morning hours are good for this

This is the same thing we saw on 10 GHz when a few of us used
tropospheric enhancement to take the North American DX record on that band.

It might be worth trying on 70cm, if KC6KGE has any antenna at all...

This morning the Tropo Enhancement continues increasing...

seem to confirm this. These are big signals and clearly there is a lot
of enhancement going on. I wish we had a WSPR station somewhere around
Redding, I think there's a possibility that the entire central valley
might be involved.
Our 10 GHz tests were from the north end of the valley, Ball Rock and
Bully Choop west of Redding, down to Mts Pinos and Frasier, a bit
southeast of KC6KGE. I suspect that this enhancement may make a path
like that, 414-450 miles, quite viable on all of the VHF-microwave
amateur bands.

It's getting better:

2015-01-16 20:42 KC6KGE 144.490460 +9 0 DM05gd
10 KP4MD CM98iq 426 338
2015-01-16 20:58 KP4MD 144.490510 +3 0 CM98iq
10 KC6KGE DM05gd 426 157

and this with the known high noise floors at KP4MD and KC6KGE too.
Carol, isn't this one of the strongest 2m WSPR signals that you've seen?

This would seem to be pushing 40 dB of enhancement. I'm noticing that we
are not seeing any of the ACS-induced "drift" or frequency error - which
helps confirm it as tropo enhancement if we had any doubt.

Yes, this is quite an outstanding tropo opening.

Tropo propagation intensity continues increasing on 16 Jan 2015

It's interesting to me to note that during the last 24 hours or so, N6GN
has not been spotting KC6KGE well or strong. I think significantly less
than is normal for this time period. I'm wondering if the inversion
layer at the southern end is acting as a duct to keep signal out of the
30,000+ air space where ACS happens. We'll have to see if things
change once the duct is gone.
It's also possible that something is wrong with the station here, WW6D
is having somewhat better success.

The tropo ducting peaked at 20:42 UTC on 16 January 2015.  The signal strengths now appear to have returned to normal.

A new tropo enhancement event over California appears to have commenced this morning.
Extremely strong 144 MHz WSPR signal from Taft, CA are being received 426 km away in Citrus Heights, CA.

A very foggy night here in Sacramento and even stronger 2 meter tropo propagation from KC6KGE in Taft, CA

Hepburn predicts a prolonged drop out in VHF-UHF Tropospheric propagation over California from February 22 through 25.

The prediction maps show tropo conditions will recede out to the Pacific Ocean leaving California inside a bubble devoid of tropo enhancement.

KC6KGE and KP4MD report loss of 144 MHz WSPR spot reports since 1052 UTC today

I would expect that we would continue to see some ACS spots.  Unfortunately, N6GN's transmitter is intermittent or non-functioning until I can repair it.

I am of the never give up school.
Even when science is mostly against me.
Spots are thin though.

Around 02:48 on 20150223 UTC - 19:48 local - My WSPR application was no
longer whispering, I could hear it muttering!

In an effort to find what was bothering it, I turned the audio up and
realized I was hearing voice transmissions. This turned out to be FM
signals on 144.490 from someone in Sunnyvale trying to reach the ISS by
transmitting "November Alpha One Sierra Sierra, standing by..."

The ISS was probably out of range or close to it when it is over Mexico
City when I looked. I heard no other voice transmissions.

While this the first time I have observed this, someone I know has
mentioned in the past about the 2 meter WSPR frequencies in use are close
to ISS ham use. I've done some ISS FM work with my VX-8 and an
handheld Arrow antenna some years ago and I don't remember the frequencies
in use being close to 144.489 because we were using 437.800 +/- doppler
for uplink and 145.800 for downlink.

If 144.490 MHz is used for ISS work, I do have some concerns transmitting
on 144.489 MHz for the typical almost 2 minute WSPR transmission. If
144.490 MHz is being used for uplink only, I have less concern but perhaps
there is a way to convince WSPR to be mute on 2 meters during certain
times.

In the past, we've just QRTed WSPR on the West Coast when we thought
someone might be using the uplink - which seems to be rarely. I wish we
had a good system for knowing when this might be.

See the top thread here in Google Groups for more history. I thought
you had been part of those discussions but I don't see your call there!

Changing the frequency would be an international undertaking.

Going QRT makes more sense.
The amount of time ISS is visible is limited.
They don't seem to use the frequency in question at all.
They pick other ones they've got available it seems.

Even worse, it would be a multi-national and multi-jurisdictional undertaking. The region police for each region would be immediately telling the rest of the world why "you can't do that".   That it's OK for, say, Europe to transmit near the uplink frequency but unthinkable for a US amateur, even though both signals are easily copy-able at the same time from the ISS for some of its orbit, makes no difference.  This is about rule-making which, in my opinion, often trumps common sense.

I agree, the best thing we can do is try to use common sense and QRT for the brief time that there might conceivably be contention.   I just wish I had a reliable way of knowing when those times will be with enough advance warning for us all to respond.

Independent of, but coincident with, the main 2m WSPR transmitter at
N6GN going intermittent, I have constructed a 2m QRP WSPR beacon from
one of Hans Summer's Ultimate3s QRSS beacons.
http://www.hanssummers.com/ultimate3.html
These multimode beacons can operate on WSPR and WSPR-15 as well as quite
a variety of other narrow band modes.  I have been running a U2 on 10m
WSPR for quite some time. With only +23 dBm and a vertical, both Europe
and VK,JA,DU spot it regularly.  W6SFH is running another U3 (not S) on
10m with a 3 element tri-bander and gets reports 10 dB stronger. I think
he is close to WAC with it after only a brief period of operation.

The U3s uses a different synthesizer from previous U2/3 beacons, which
had AD9850 DDS boards (~$8 on eBay).  The complete kits are very
inexpensive and can be used with an OEM GPS board to get time, grid
square and self-calibration.  However, as they are designed, frequency
stability within a 2m WSPR interval on the higher bands leaves something
to be desired.
So, on both the U2 and U3s, I have injected GPSDO referenced clock
signals.  These make them completely stable and pretty accurate. There
appear to still be frequency setting/math precision issues internal to
Hans' code and there may still be some discrepencies at the .1 Hz level
inside K1JT WSPR code. I've been working with K9AN on some of this to
try to figure out what is going on.

But, even with mysteries remaining, my modified U3s will generate a
de-codable WSPR signal on 2m. I've just put it on the air, on the same
antenna that I normally use for the out-of-service IC706. Here's the
almost immediate result:

>  2015-02-23 05:00      N6GN      144.490496      -7      0      CM88ok      0.02      K6PZB      CM88nk      7      270
>  2015-02-23 05:00      N6GN      144.490496      +4      0 CM88ok        0.02      WW6D      CM88pl      9      57

As I wrote above, I think the 4 Hz error may be firmware related but the
signal is still usable and at about +13 dBm, 20 milliwatts.

So, the challenge is, can anyone besides WW6D and K6PZB copy this QRP
signal?  It's about 30 dB down from the power I've precisely run when
everything was working properly. Thus, any one of you who has ever seen
my 20W signal in +SNR areas, may have a shot at it.  Just something fun
to do...
