PLease see info below about the case in the news this morning and also a positive behavior workshop  in JUne.
I think we should all attend one at some point - given the number of special needs we are getting through the group now - but personally I’m not going on a Sunday morning in June.

Hi everyone

Further to my previous message there is not much that I can add immediately following Tim Kidd's message received a few minutes ago but please note the following extracts (in italics);

In the recent case 'reasonable adjustments were not made to allow this young person to take part in Scouting. As a Movement, we are committed to being fully inclusive and we have made a personal apology to the family. I’m sure you will understand that we cannot go into further details of this specific case.'

'The law, and our own rules, mean that all Scout Groups must make reasonable adjustments to support young people with additional needs, including autism, so that all young people can access Scouting and progress between sections.'

Our volunteers 'are not expected to be experts and already work hard to deliver inspiring programmes whilst juggling the pressures of their busy lives.'

How we understand what is meant by reasonable adjustmentsis something that we need to develop through discussion amongst teams, with parents and the particular child and drawing on expertise when the necessary. Openness in all our dealings in these difficult situations is in my view crucial.

Tim Kidd has indicated that TSA 'will be including links to our resources in Scouting+ on Thursday this week which will link to specific support for members, parents and carers in relation to autism and Scouting as well as guidance onmaking reasonable adjustments.'

I recommend that you remain on the look out forScouting+ this week and take note of the information provided on this particular issue.

If you do not receive Scouting+it is likely that your Profile details (e-mail address) and/or communications options on Compass are not up to date.

Please take this opportunity to advise your leadership teams to log in toCompass and check that their personal information and options are also up to date.

Tim concluded with 'Thank you very much for your hard work and commitment' ... to which I add my own thanks for all you do for the young people of our community.

Hi everyone

The breaking news this morning about the legal case and compensation award against the Scout Association will cause concern for all volunteers in Scouting. Although there are articles appearing in the press TSA has not yet posted anything to the website. I would expect they are considering the most appropriate response and guidance that should be issued ....As I write I see that Tim Kidd has sent a message which I will look at asap.

It is however timely that a date has been set for a workshop on promoting positive behaviour which will address some of the issues around how we deal with young people who present forms of behaviour that are challenging.

The invitation for the 10th June workshop has been sent via Eventbrite to GSLs. It is my hope that you will be aware of the issues that your leaders confront and encourage them attend if there is a particular need. You are also encouraged to attend so that you are aware of the issues and strategies that may be required.

Here is the Eventbrite link in case you have not found the invitation yet.

In the meanwhile you will be able to book places for up to 10 leader. The maximum for this event is 40. Other dates are available but this is the one that I selected to ensure Horsham secured a date. We might reasonably expect the demand to increase after recent events and depending on the response from yourselves I will seek another date from the course provider.

Please act quickly to ensure your leaders are able to attend this workshop.
