PLease see email below re state of campsite . . .
Last week the DC and I received an email from one of our Scout Leaders complaining about the state of their designated site at Beacon Hill
To summarise the email :-
This weekend that has just gone we held our first camp of 2018. We found it to be in a state that we were not impressed with. There were two piles of wood around the fire, one of which has nails sticking out, along with lots of bricks within our fire pit area that have been collected from somewhere around site and then not returned. We also had several large items of litter around the camp fire area. The worst for us was that we had two of our six benches that the scouts had put in missing, I assume they have been burned. Each year we hold a working party to keep the site fit for use which the scouts take great pride in.
Quite rightly the Leader and all the Scouts were very disappointed at this state of affairs.
Whilst it is possible ( we are aware that this has happened in the past) that unauthorised intruders may very well have been responsible, both the DC and I feel it is opportune to remind all Groups that sites should be left as they are found and it is not appropriate to be taking wood and items that are used for seating etc.
All Section Leaders should be reminded that it is their responsibility to set the boundaries for their members and explain that other sites are to be respected and are out of bounds for collecting wood etc.
Section Leaders should know what their members are doing and must inspect the sites they are using and impress upon their members that sites are left in a clean and tidy condition eg as they would expect to find a site when they arrive.
We should also ask that any damage is reported as soon as it is discovered and photographs are taken.
Just a thought - Perhaps Groups should take photos of their sites in the condition that they expect it to be kept and ensure all their Leaders have a copy.
The terms and conditions on the online and hard copy booking forms will be amended to specifically reflect the responsibility of Leaders re site usage in addition to the use of Gummys
I acknowledge that damage to sites is by no means a regular occurrence but we all have a responsibility to ensure the our District campsite is maintained in a condition for all to enjoy.
Please can this email be circulated to all your Leaders.
Thank you
Anthony
DESC - Dave, Can you please circulate this email to all ESU Leaders - Thank you
