Bootup on 6100/60

When I try to boot up, the monitor  shows an icon of a floppy with a question mark and then hangs up.  I presume it is looking for the OS in the floppy drive.  I understand there is a keyboard combo that will direct the computer to look for the OS in the hard drive.  If so, can any of you tell me what the secret is?  I don't have a manual for the machine. Thanks for any help.

Try zapping the p-ram, then c key, or command option shift delete.

The question-mark-in-a-floppy icon means the computer hasn't been able to locate an OS in *any* of the drives, including the hard drive. Supposing that you had a bootable system in the hard drive, this can be due to two reasons: either the computer can't find the hard drive, or the hard drive's contents have become damaged and the computer can't read them.

Check that the hard drive's SCSI ID is 0 (if you haven't changed it, it should be), and unplug any external SCSI devices and terminators. If your computer has an SCSI CD-ROM and you have moved it recently, maybe the terminator or one of the cables are out of place - open the computer and check it. If the problem persists, you can try to boot from an install CD by putting it in the drive, rebooting and pressing the key combo (Command-Option-C, I think, but maybe I'm wrong). When you have booted, you can use the Finder to check the drive's contents, or Disk First Aid to diagnose and try to repair it. Tell us your progress, and any problems you have. Good luck!

First, I would make sure the battery is OK.  A bad battery on my 7100 caused all sorts of weird problems.  They cost around 12 dollars at radio shack.

no you are wrong. you have to reboot the operating system, its not looking in the floppy drive its looking in the hard drive, most likely something got moved around so you will have to reload the system

Thanks for all the suggestions. I found a website with a whole bunch
of "secret" key combos including their functions. It is

change the 3.6V battery (which was 14 years old) , and tried some of
the key combos, but I always get the floppy icon with a question
mark. I don't have a CD drive. I seem to remember there was a floppy
disk that was called Disk Tools that permitted booting from the floppy
drive. How can I get one of them? I think both the hard drive OS and
the floppy drive are OK. They worked fine one day last month and the
next day, I couldn't boot up at all.
Still optimistic, but presently stymied,

Zap the PRAM again ---- changing the battery would have left it in an
'undermined' condition.

Assuming that the HD has a bootable system on it, the hardware
functions of the firmware should find it eventually. [I've heard
quotes of HOURS before a successful boot completion.] I.E. Start it
up, let it get to the 'floppy/?" screen, and go read a book for a while.

Assuming it does eventually boot up, go to whatever "system/boot"
selector your system uses, and set it to the available HD. (That's
what gets the PRAM boot info. set).

Thank you for your advice. IN the meantime, however, my hard drive
has crashed. It sounds a terrible screeching when I turn the machine

Those Hard Drives are so easy to replace, cheap and reliable, or you
can boot from an external drive. They are bullet proof compared to
todays. 6100 is a great machine, if you get a Newer G3 card you can
get 300Ghz out of this Puppy 256 MBs of Ram and the software is
pennies on the dollar and does a lot of stuff, albeit slower but I
still use mine and love it. Ever since 1995 new and only replaced the
PRAM battery and upgraded the HD to a 4.5 Gig
