Recipes and Cookbooks, the show, is about food and also not about food. It's about how food and recipes define our existence in more ways than one. Food might be for humans, our biological brethren, trees, animals, and microbiota. Recipes can also be manuals for anything, not just food. And here you will see quite a few.

The artists in the show look at this simple notion that I fed( pun intended) them from many vantage points. Some approach it with memories, others with trepidation, and some with nonchalance and a smirk. Some artists have created objects, books, installations, and songs; others have chosen to perform.

While Advithi Emmi and Manmeet Devgun look at gender politics, Seema Jain and Sudha Baregar use it as a means to point at regional culture, identity, memory and nostalgia.  Suresh Kumar G presents us with death ceremony rituals through food, while Umesh Kumar PN explores magical recipes for all sorts of physiological and philosophical dilemmas. Smitha Cariappa looks at seasonal foods for the body that cannot be eaten. Antara Mukerji dives into a Bengali song about eggs and raises questions on food sustainability. Manjunath Honnapura gives us unreadable recipes to hint at all that is lost in translation.

The exhibition aims to go behind the act of cooking and consuming to look at the several ways food and recipes play a role in our lives.

Smitha Cariappa and Suresh Kumar G will perform their solo pieces on the day of the opening. Please gather by 7 p.m. to make sure you get them.
