History of development of technical institutions in India will be incomplete if name of GEC (now JEC) is not mentioned. It has got distinction of being 2nd college set up in India and is the premier institution of engineering education in Central India.
With the punch line “Onwards on Wings”, it had started its voyage since 7th July 1947 with the inauguration by then Hon’ble Minister of Education Shri S V Gokhale. This institution of higher learning is among the oldest & finest centres of its kind in India. In its pursuit of excellence in education in several fields if engineering it acquired a high rating in the national scenario.
Prof. S P Chakravarti, Head of Electrical Technology Deptt. Of Indian Institution of Science Bangalore was appointed as first Principal of the college. First batch if college started in U shape mess building of Robertson College with 60 students and with a team of seven professors.
The college started with four years B.E. (Hons) degree course in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical & Tele-Communication Engineering branches. In 1957, Post Graduate Course in 8 disciplines of various branches was introduced in the college. In 1973, the 4 years degree course was replaced by 5 years integrated course.
In early 1952 a closed circuit TV system with a video camera was installed in tale-communication department much before TV broadcast was recognised in the country.
In the branch of Power Engineering, a high voltage lab of the capacity of 1.6 million voltage generation was set up in view of the growing need of an extra high voltage transmission system in the country. In this respect also, GEC was very much ahead of contemporary colleges in India.
In late 40s, a plane was specially acquired for the benefit of Mechanical Engineering students looking to future prospects in the civil aviation and the defence of the country.
Civil Engineering branch was provided with advance soil mechanics lab to enable the student to analyse and study the properties of various type of soil for construction of Dams & barrages.
Within a decade from its inauguration i.e. by 1955, the college earned a reputation of one of the best engineering colleges in the country equipped with labs & modern instruments in all branches of engineering. Consequently, research work also got momentum and a large number of papers were published by staff members encouraging postgraduate studies in various specialities.
In 1962 an occasion appeared to confer the status of INDIAN INSTITUE OF TECHNOLOGY to GEC however finally the decision was titled in favour of Kanpur. In 2003 again momentum was gathered for JEC to become an IIT but it could not yield favourable results.
In a bid to promote new courses, Computer Science and Engineering department was established in 1996 keeping in mind the increasing applications of computers in all the areas of human endeavour.
Industrial and Production Engineering department was started in 1998 to fulfil the keen desire of erstwhile President of India, Late Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma.
In the last few decades the advent of Information Technology has revolutionised the whole Globe. Keeping its importance in mind, Information Technology Department was inaugurated in JEC in 1999-2000.
Since 1951, more than 16000 students from various engineering and applied science courses have passed out form JEC. A large number of alumni are holding top most positions all engineering & education department in the country & aboard, bringing name & fame to their Alma-Mater.
Ex students of the college have formed Alumni Association known as “Jabalpur Engineering College Alumni Association” (JECCA) having a membership of more than 2000 from all over the world including USA, Canada, Australia & Switzerland, which is growing day by day. The objective of this Association is to bring all alumni together, highlight achievements of outstanding alumni, project the image of their Alma-Mater and help students of the college in as many ways as possible in respect of their education, employment & career planning.
Presently JEC offers B.E. Degree courses in 7 disciplines and 9 PG courses in various Engineering Fields, 3 PG courses in applied science and M.C.A.
The college is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi Proudyogiki Vishwavidyalay Bhopal M.P. which is the only Technical University in M.P. The college was declared autonomous in 1997-98 by the Govt. Of M.P.
Presently JEC is having online counselling centre& Nodal centre of RGVP Bhopal. Having MOU with multinational companies like IBM, CISCO & TCS etc. Under Technical Education Quality Improvement Program (TEQIP) of World Bank, library automation is carried out. Central Computing facility, Language Lab, AC/DC Drive Lab, Communication Lab, CAD Lab, Campus Wide Networking are executed through this project.
JEC has achieved several milestones living up to its motto- “Onwards on Wings”- through a process of technological advancement.
So dear friends feel proud to be a JECite.
