In 1969, I photographed three veterans who happened to share the same
hospital room. The Spanish American War, World War I and World War II
were represented.
When I took that photo, it never dawned on me that our generation of
soldiers in Vietnam would ever look that old and gray.
In 2007, a young woman who had lived us with us briefly was the first
female airman to be killed in action in Iraq. She was 21.
Memorial Day is more than just a day off from work.
