Winter Weight

Morning sun rises
Pewter over cotton-battened branches
Late snow so bulky old limbs bow

All lies quiet
On this uphill trek, but for my breathing
Labored from the climb

At the overlook
I stand coat padded, blue knit hatted, in heavy boots
My mother used to wear

While the world below
Sleeps infinite, unaffected by the latest
Frozen blow

Spattered stripes
Lash north sides of trees in white,
Linger till later warmth arrives

Lately my sunrises
All seem gray, weather weighty on my limbs
And yet

Failing eyes squinting
Over increased loss of hearing, and stubborn
I seek signs of greener times

Susan McMillan, USA

— I was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA, in 1956 but have resided in Rochester, Minnesota, for more than forty years. I am a retired technical writer and lifelong poet. I actively promote poetry in my community, and have contributed work to many regional publications throughout the upper midwest region of the US. I am most inspired by nature, and take an annual trip up near the Canadian border to canoe the pristine waters and hike the woodlands of the north. These experiences come home with me to become poetry. When not in the woods, I am most inspired by other poets. To you, poets of this world, I owe a great deal of gratitude.
