Hi again, it's Jay Rosenberg (a.k.a. Jay Blue Tape), and I'm once again activating our beloved acre in Hayes Valley, this time in partnership with the Mayor's Office of Housing, Hayes Valley Neighborhood Association, Mercy Housing and Haight Street Art Center.

Once-upon-a farm, a freeway offramp, a rumored 1950s gas station, housing, and historically a suburban resort, the site is now Hayes Valley Art Works, and it is open 6 days a week from 12-5pm (closed on Tuesdays). In about a year, it will become 455 Fell, a new affordable family housing complex.

This Wednesday we are hosting An Afternoon with Mark Lakeman, The co-founder of Portland's City Repair will lead a 90-minute "placemaking story-telling" session, followed by a panel discussion at 3pm headlined by Mr. Lakeman and including Krista Canellakis (SF's Deputy Innovation Officer), Lawrence Grodeska (CivicMakers), Ilana Lipsett [Freespace], and Jay Rosenberg (49 Farms). More info & RSVP  →

I'm also hosting a FREE Introduction to Permaculture on Friday, March 18th from 12-5pm and again on Sunday, March 20th from 12-5pm. We have a special guest instructor, Matthew Stephens, one of Chicago's foremost experts on permaculture and community organizing. More info →

Please let me know if you have any questions or would like to discuss further.

Warmly,
Jay

P.S. Even though I am most often thought of as an urban farmer for my work in recent years at Hayes Valley Farm and 49 Farms, this project, Hayes Valley Art Works, is not a farm. It is a community center, temporarily activating vacant public land in a partnership with the entire community until construction can begin for new affordable housing. The project is itself an art installation, and is expected to be open to all for about one year. The themes of the project are Art and Education, Creative Reuse and Making, Community and Placemaking.
