Subject: WR return: to be read after your final promo paper

I write using this platform as there will be no opportunity to do so verbally for the batch.

Many times, text-based remarks are better ways to manage one’s feelings.

Assessing the final draft brings many mixed sentiments

I understand it took a toll on many teams, given its proximity to promo prep.

Still, my desire to see all succeed according to their best ability has been a constant call.

Thankfully, there were some mitigating if not redeeming facts as well…

-enthusiasm and resilience shown by various teams

-constant reminders and tips to manage pressure sent before deadlines

-avail of consults since term 2

-a team of 4-5 committed intelligent minds (if they choose to)

So pardon (bless) me if some comments you will read on your soon-to-receive draft were penned with frustration (and delight). It was not easy to step into the shoes of 5+ markers (coz I know all of them) and imaging how they will assess a team whom they have never known… dealing with a topic they are likely to seek clarification and yet be detached about. Many wait to enjoy your report and reward you for the effort put in. While marking, it was also difficult to resist the faith invested in every individual and team over these past 9 months, the ideas and rationale debated over long hours in holidays and a personal, determined yet constant fight against mental fatigue having to jump into multiple issues from film to nature to hawking and disability etc within an hour or so of marking. Like any PW supervisor, every report was  / is looked upon as a cherished if not, combined effort of pride and love cultivated for a topic all have elected to pursue. Some have already made that mark. Regardless of grade received (and I hope they do well), I suspect these groups had convinced themselves from the start to give their best as a team consistently, esp when the going gets tough. The WR is a stark and naked ambition / reflection of how your team actually worked. It is both a thrilling and constipated vision.

These mixed / positive expectations elicited different feelings when pages come un-paginated / diagrams and tables unengaged and pictures end up not always conveying the depth they were designed for. Un-paginated work was most painful. Knowing that the entire WR needs to be an organic piece of work, it became extra challenging to make detailed references in a sad wearied attempt to guide you further on this final lap, knowing the seconds are ticking by and we only have 15mins  left. This simple lack of consideration for your marker resulted in confusion in terms of readability and coherence. And the next people to receive this will be those who will award your final grade. Go then, move ahead and decide what you think is best for your group.

15 mins is all every group should expect when you receive back your draft. For groups which have done fairly well, there will be more quiet refinements to be made. And I think group instinct will already inform what you can do. Other teams may experience the need to recalibrate their efforts and develop greater intellectual hold or just sheer team-effort before 21 Oct becoz I won’t ever get to see the WR again. You can still make a positive difference to the way things are turning out.

Attached is the Dummy’s Guide to examine and abide closely before your final submission to the powers-to-be on 21 Oct.

Specific queries may be made during OP lessons but no more specific references to your own WR from this week.

Strive to get everything settled 2 days before the important date. I know of a group that proof-read their work more than 15 times before submission and a class that completed it as, well a class of committed learners….

The sheer quality of each team reaches its zenith from here.

=========================================================================================================

Part 1

I require the following groups to see me before Thurs IF possible.

Could u do me  a favour? PLs download the draft submitted and READ it through as a team before you see me.

Note down what you think are areas that merit concern. Put yourselves in the shoes of an examiner and let me hear your thoughts from what you think might be their point of view. The draft will only be returned to you thereafter.

RJ 157, 156

RJ 117, 252

RJ 191, 190, 188

Part II

With the exception of 5B, the rest are to follow the OP lect schedule and collect their WRs on the allocated days as listed.

8 Oct:  All arts including 5B

9 Oct: The 2 science classes

To facilitate ease, you may meet me from 740am to 945am and thereafter from 225pm.

Email me for an appt.

There is the CCA conf happening on 3 Oct so pls manage your time evenly.

From this point on, it’s time for all to grow up and take rightful ownership of your learning.

Pax et bonum,

Eddie Koh
