to 1301: Negotiating Curriculum
One concrete idea that I plan on implementing in my classroom tomorrow
is fine-tuning the way I introduce new storybooks to my students. Book
introductions can either be too lengthy or too short. It can also be
of poor quality that children are disengaged from the onset. I plan on
using Marie Clay's idea assessing and foreseeing students' potential
difficulty with a text by restructuring the way I introduce texts. In
addition, I will utilize anticipation guides which children can
utilize during the introduction and throughout the text.
Another implication suggested from the readings comes from the
second article of the Hidden Curriculum Packet. A Standard based
programs and its implementation is the overarching umbrella that
affects curriculum, assessment and instructions. This explicitly
demonstrates the importance of first hearing a variety of input from
educators before the standards are created and second have a system in
place that addresses these many interdependent elements that
determines whether or not the standard's intent will be met through
successful implementation on all levels. As educators, our
responsibility is to read and understand the standards and its
purposes. I have already started my journey of trying to understand
the standards for myself so I can see if they can be implemented
within the classroom, which I believe the can. Next, I plan on
searching out authentic multicultural child-friendly activities that
can meet these standard while at the same time inclusive of all
children. I hope to someday create such a curriculum.
