Online Assignment # 1

Some key emphases made in this collection of articles are: social
learning, the child’s place in the curriculum and education in general.
For me I am looking at Dewey and what he says about education. As a
teacher working in a minority neighborhood, I am very concern about my
students, and at the same time, I try to be very careful. I agree with
Dewey where he says on pg, 17, “The only true education comes through
the stimulation of the child’s powers by the demands of social
situations…” I believe that each child comes to school knowing
something, and we as teachers should build on that.

Three articles that I want to explore more are 1. The Hidden Curriculum
2. Real Time Strategy Game and 3. Education as a Practice of Freedom.
The Hidden Curriculum is all about social change with teachers as the
agents. As educators, we have been doing great things and will continue
to do even greater things with our students. We can transform the world
the children are living in. thinking about my own pedagogy, I want to
always be a reflective teacher, who is constantly inquiring to better
improve my students and my own practice. I want to explore Real time
strategy game because it involves technology, and we are currently
living in a technological era. I want to be able to incorporate
technology in my daily lessons. Education as a Practice of Freedom drew
my interest. Even though the population that Freire spoke about were of
a different age group (pgs. 16-19), than my third graders, I can still
make the connection with them. My students are mostly underprivileged,
and are trying to “overcome the limits of situations.” These students
need guidance to become fully human. Indeed language, culture, history,
and community are dependent on education. I hope to reach to Level
4with my students in transforming their worlds.

Some pedagogical implications I can draw from these readings are how to
address certain concerns, issues, and experiences in my classroom. I
also want my classroom to be welcoming, safe, and print rich to meet
the needs of my students.

Hey Ann. I totally agree with you on your point about becoming
reflective teachers. Don't you think this work allows us to really
think about our practice? I feel like the work we do week to week in
this program gives us such an advantage and a constant source of
understanding and improvement in our work with our students.

Additionally, and switching gears, I felt that the populations in the
articles are quite different than the ones I teach (upper class,
advantaged, 4th graders). However, as we have discussed in class, the
age/socio economic labels that our student might have does not limit
the work we cna do. (Look at what we read about in Schmit). However, I
always find our class discussions so helpful. It is so interesting to
me how our classmates can do such great work with their Kindergarten
or 12th grade students. Looking forward to continue these discussions
in class :)
