Some of The question presented in last weeks last was "What is Identity?" As I read the Moje and Heath question, I asked myself the same question. What is identity? Is it a subjective construct or is it ubiquitous? Well, as I read the article, I remembered a quote my grandmother used to say to me as a child growing up in Jamaica. She would often say to me, "show me your company, I tell you who you are? Often a person is identified by the company they keep, or even some behavior they may exhibit. In the educational setting, children are often identified by their academic performance. The State of New York identifies children as gifted, average learners or special education learners based on their performances on the states' assessment. Whether it is identity or label it is still some form of how the children are viewed. Identities is being conceptualized based on learning. However, in my opinion, learning is more than being able to compartmentalize knowledge and or getting a numbered grade on a state assessment that helps to define the learner. It should be noted that identity and learning are related in many different ways because as identify shifts, so does learning and vice versa. In this article, it is noted that "identities are used in positioning selves and others, but they are not the actual positioning itself. They are conceptions of oneself and others built through experiences that are used to mediate that positioning".
Some of the key emphasis made in this article is
