Dear Park Slope Neighbor,
A couple weeks back, many of you responded to our call to send a
quick and easy eFax to Community Board 6 expressing support for the
Department of Transportation's sensible plan for traffic calming on
9th Street. Today, we're asking you to do the same with a fax to
Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz.
As you know, Park Slope Neighbors supports DOT's 9th Street
plan. We wholeheartedly believe that the planned changes will
make traffic-flow more orderly, improve pedestrian safety and provide
much-needed facilities for bicycling, and will benefit all users of
9th Street, including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, bus riders,
residents and businesses. You can see details of DOT's plan
here:
Of course, change often creates anxiety, and a group of 9th
Street residents have lobbied elected officials like the Borough
President to reject the plan, under the mistaken belief that the
roadway changes would eliminate their ability to double-park,
overwhelm the street with cyclists, and lead to traffic jams. It
is critical, therefore, that those of us who support a safer 9th
Street make sure that we speak out. Click the link below to send
an efax to Marty Markowitz expressing your support for the plan.
It takes just a minute to take this important action:
Thank you for helping to make a difference!
2) Reminder: UNITY 2007 Workshop this Saturday
Please join other Brooklyn residents, elected officials, members
of neighborhood organizations and churches, architects and planners
this Saturday, April 28th, for a one-day community workshop and design
charrette to create the UNITY 2007 Community Development Plan for the
Vanderbilt Railyards.
Participants in the day-long planning meeting will discuss
housing, jobs, design issues, open space and transportation. We
will talk about options for the neighborhood if some, all or none of
the proposed "Atlantic Yards" project is completed.
The workshop will produce an updated set of plans for the future of
the 8.5-acre railyards.
The UNITY 2007 effort is sponsored by the Hunter College Center
for Community Planning and Development, and the Council of Brooklyn
Neighborhoods. PSN urges you to attend the workshop, and to
encourage your friends and neighbors to take part, as well. No
special expertise is required. You can pre-register for the
workshop today by sending an email to
cc...@hunter.cuny.edu or calling 212-650-3328, but walk-up
registrants will be welcome tomorrow.

Environmental Lawsuit Plaintiffs' Weenie Roast and Photo
Op!!!
Sunday, April 29 at 1:30 p.m.
Brooklyn Bear's Garden
Corner of Flatbush Avenue and Pacific Street
The 26 community and advocacy organizations (including Park Slope
Neighbors) suing the Empire State Development Corporation seeking
nullification of the "Atlantic Yards" Environmental Impact
Statement are holding a barbecue and photo op this Sunday. The
weenie roast is a chance for co-plaintiffs and their supporters (that
means you!) to mingle, enjoy what promises to be a sunny, 70-degree
day in a lovely community garden, and have a group photo taken that
will dramatize the broad community support for the lawsuit.
Please bring something to grill and beverages to share. The folks
at the Bear's Garden will provide cups, plates, condiments and the
grills.
The group photo will be taken at 2 p.m. sharp. If you have
any questions about this event, please send an email to
jon...@earthlink.net.
Sincerely,
Eric McClure
