Just For Today
May 8 Teachable
"We have learned that it is okay to not know all the answers,
for then we are teachable and can learn to live our new life
successfully" Basic Text, p. 93
In a way, addiction is a great teacher. And if addiction teaches
us nothing else, it will teach us humility. We hear it said that it took
our very best thinking to get to NA. Now that we're here, we're
here to learn.
The NA Fellowship is a wonderful learning environment for the
recovering addict. We aren't made to feel stupid at meetings.
Instead, we find others who've been exactly where we've been and
who've found a way out. All we have to do is admit that we don't
have all the answers, then listen as others share what's worked for
them.
As recovering addicts and as human beings, we have much to learn.
Other addicts—and other humans—have much to teach us about what
works and what doesn't. As long as we remain teachable, we can take
advantage of the experience of others.
Just for today: I will admit that I don't have all the answers.
I will look and listen to the experience of others for the answers
I need. page. 134

Freedom From "King Alcohol"
. . . let us not suppose even for an instant that we are not under
constraint... Our former tyrant, King Alcohol, always stands ready again
to clutch us to him. Therefore, freedom from alcohol is the great "must"
that has to be achieved, else we go mad or die.
AS BILL SEES IT, p. 134
When drinking, I lived in spiritual, emotional, and sometimes, physical
confinement. I had constructed my prison with bars of self-will and
self-indulgence, from which I could not escape. Occasional dry spells that
seemed to promise freedom would turn out to be little more than hopes of a
reprieve. True escape required a willingness to follow whatever right
actions were needed to turn the lock. With that willingness and action,
both the lock and the bars themselves opened for me. Continued willingness
and action keep me free -- in a kind of extended daily probation -- that
need never end.

Twenty-Four Hours A Day by Hazelden/ May 7th
A.A. Thought for the Day
I'm grateful that I found a program in A.A. that could
keep me sober. I'm grateful that A.A. has shown me
the way to faith in a Higher Power, because the renewing
of that faith has changed my way of life. And I've found
a happiness and contentment that I had forgotten existed,
by simply believing in God and trying to live the kind of a
life that I know He wants me to live. As long as I stay
grateful, I'll stay sober. Am I in a grateful frame of mind?
Meditation for the Day
God can work through you better when you are not hurrying.
Go very slowly, very quietly, from one duty to the next,
taking time to rest and pray between. Do not be too busy.
Take everything in order. Venture often into the rest of God
and you will find peace. AU work that results from resting
with God is good work. Claim the power to work miracles in
human lives. Know that you can do many things through the
Higher Power. Know that you can do good things through God
who rests you and gives you strength. Partake regularly of
rest and prayer.
Prayer for the Day
I pray that I may not be in too much of a hurry. I pray that I
may take time out often to rest with God.

Giving Ourselves What We Deserve
I worked at a good job, making a decent salary. I had been recovering for
years. Each morning, I got into my car and I thanked God for the car. The
heater didn't work. And the chance of the car not starting was almost as
great as the chance that it would. I just kept suffering through and
thanking God. One day, it occurred to me that there was absolutely no good
reason I couldn't buy myself a new car - that moment - if I wanted one. I
had been gratitudeing myself into unnecessary deprivation and martyrdom. I
bought the new car - that day.
--Anonymous
Often, our instinctive reaction to something we want or need is, No! I can't
afford it!
The question we can learn to ask ourselves is, But can I?
Many of us have learned to habitually deprive ourselves of anything we might
want, and often things we need.
Sometimes, we can misuse the concept of gratitude to keep ourselves
unnecessarily deprived.
Gratitude for what we have is an important recovery concept. So is believing
we deserve the best and making an effort to stop depriving ourselves and
start treating ourselves well.
There is nothing wrong with buying ourselves what we want when we can afford
to do that. Learn to trust and listen to yourself about what you want.
There's nothing wrong with buying yourself a treat, buying yourself
something new.
There are times when it is good to wait. There are times when we
legitimately cannot afford a luxury. But there are many times when we can.
Today, I will combine the principles of gratitude for what I have with the
belief that I deserve the best. If there is no good reason to deprive
myself, I won't.

NURTURING YOURSELF
By Lloyd J. Thomas, Ph.D.
What's wrong with this statement: "If you loved me, you'd know I
need emotional nurturing. And when your partner fails to nurture you
the way you have learned to expect it, you feel unloved and resentful.
Mothers in particular have been taught that to be self-nurturing is
"selfish." They always have to put the needs of their children first.
Women who are always addressing the needs of a spouse and children
quickly become emotionally empty. They lose track of who they are
other than a parent. They often become unhappy and resentful.
Consider this: when you are empty and resentful, what is the of the
parent/spouse you bring to your relationships? Are you bringing to
your spousal relationship the best you can be? Are you bringing to
your children the best parent you can be? If you are always giving
water to others, will anyone ever suspect you may be thirsty? Can you
give to others that which you do not have within yourself?
When we're grown up, it becomes our responsibility to nurture
ourselves, or to let others know precisely what we want, and ask
directly (using the words, "will you...) for something that would
address our desire.
No matter how much I might love you, I cannot "read your mind" or
"know your need" without you telling me about it. To do so is
presumptive on my part. To change my behavior toward you based on my
own unconfirmed assumptions is at best intrusive and at worst,
self-neglectful. You know the old adage, "When you assume, you make
an ass of u and me."
When we were young children, most all of us accurately concluded
that we were unable to address most all of our own needs, including
our need to be nurtured. And if our parents were at all nurturing, we
came to believe that we always needed someone else to nurture us, and
we could not be self-nurturing. If we carry such conclusions into
adulthood, we become dependent on others (usually a spouse) to nurture
us, or we label self-nurturing as "selfish" and fail to learn
self-nurturing skills, thereby failing to meet our primary
responsibility as a grown-up: to see to it that we are well cared for.
We all need to become our own best parents. We need to become
self-nurturing or learn how to ask directly for our need for nurturing
be met by others.
We often have been so neglectful of learning self-nurturing skills,
we remain ignorant of what those skills are. We also remain dependent
on others to figure out what our nurturing needs are and to provide
them without us having to let them know what they might be.
So, in an effort to inform you of several possible self-nurturing
skills, I offer you the following list...as long as room in this
column will allow. Practice any of these skills on a daily basis, and
you increase your skill at becoming your own best self-nurturer.
1. Take a warm bath complete with bubbles or bath oil.
2. Have breakfast in bed
3. Take a sauna or get a massage
4. Buy yourself a card, flower or gift
5. Go for a walk on your favorite path
6. Have a manicure or pedicure
7. Watch a sunset and go to bed early
8. Wake up early and watch a sunrise
9. Relax in a warm blanket with a good book or soft music
10. Take a "mental health day off" from work
11. Call a good friend...or several good friends
12. Go out for your favorite meal at your favorite restaurant...all
by yourself
13. Fix a special dinner for yourself and eat by candlelight
14. Ask a special person to cuddle, feed, read, or nurture you
15. Buy yourself a stuffed animal and play with it.
16. Record and listen to your own self--affirmation tape
17. Read an inspirational book
19. Practice taking your own time, relaxing or meditating
Make up your own list of self-nurturing activities, things you
enjoy, things that make you feel good about yourself, things only you
can do for you. Then when you feel your need to be nurtured, bring
out the list. Practice self-nurturing and your self-esteem will rise,
your self-confidence will be strengthened, and your sense of
self-worth will grow. Just as you would offer caring and nurturing to
others to deepen your relationship, you can do the same for yourself
and deepen self-awareness and self-care. And that is your primary
responsibility as a grown-up, a spouse and a parent.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*One Day At A Time*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"Very young children have a very subtle relationship with the visible and
invisible worlds. They possess a form of sensibility which finds its origin
in the distant past, when human beings were fully conscious of belonging to
the living organism of nature.. This is why children perceive animals,
plants, stones and objects as beings that are very close to them; they talk
to them, they are their friends.
Some children even enter into contact with the spirits of nature, they see
them, they smile at them, they have conversations with them; they listen and
they answer. But as time goes on, because of the attitude displayed by
adults and because of the education they receive, children lose this
contact. Therefore, for the good of the children, but also for their own
inner evolution, parents, educators and anyone involved in looking after
children must give this matter some serious consideration. Careful
observation of children in early childhood will allow them to delve into the
book of the child's soul and discover the true secrets of life."

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*First Things First*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
John Powell, A Professor at Loyola University in Chicago writes about a student in his Theology of Faith class named Tommy: Some twelve years ago, I stood watching my university students file into the classroom for our first session in the Theology of Faith. That was the first day I first saw Tommy. My eyes and my mind both blinked. He was combing his long flaxen hair, which hung six inches below his shoulders. It was the first time I had ever seen a boy with hair that long. I guess it was just coming into fashion then. I know in my mind that it isn't what's on your head but what's in it that counts; but on that day I was unprepared and my emotions flipped. I immediately filed Tommy under "S" for strange ...very strange.
Tommy turned out to be the "atheist in residence" in my Theology of Faith course. He constantly objected to, smirked at, or whined about the possibility of an unconditionally loving Father-God. We lived with each other in relative peace for one semester, although I admit he was for me at times a serious pain in the back pew.
When he came up at the end of the course to turn in his final exam, he asked in a slightly cynical tone: "Do you think I'll ever find God?" I decided instantly on a little shock therapy. "No!" I said very emphatically. "Oh," he responded, "I thought that was the product you were pushing." I let him get five steps from the classroom door and then called out: "Tommy! I don't think you'll ever find him, but I am absolutely certain that he will find you!" He shrugged a little and left my class and my life. I felt slightly disappointed at the thought that he had missed my clever line: "He will find you!" At least I thought it was clever.
Later I heard that Tommy had graduated and I was duly grateful. Then a sad report, I heard that Tommy had terminal cancer. Before I could search him out, he came to see me. When he walked into my office, his body was very badly wasted, and the long hair had all fallen out as a result of chemotherapy. But his eyes were bright and his voice was firm, for the first time, I believe. "Tommy, I've thought about you so often. I hear you are sick !" I blurted out. "Oh, yes, very sick. I have cancer in both lungs. It's a matter of weeks." "Can you talk about it, Tom?" "Sure, what would you like to know?" "What's it like to be only twenty-four and dying?" "We'll, it could be worse." "Like what?" "Well, like being fifty and having no values or ideals, like being fifty and thinking that booze, seducing women, and making money are the real 'biggies' in life."
I began to look through my mental file cabinet under "S" where I had filed Tommy as strange. (It seems as though everybody I try to reject by classification God sends back into my life to educate me.) "But what I really came to see you about," Tom said, " is something you said to me on the last day of class." (He remembered!) He continued, "I asked you if you thought I would ever find God and you said, 'No!' which surprised me. Then you said, 'But he will find you.' I thought about that a lot, even though my search for God was hardly intense at that time. (My "clever" line. He thought about that a lot!) "But when the doctors removed a lump from my groin and told me that it was malignant, then I got serious about locating God. And when the malignancy spread into my vital organs, I really began banging bloody fists against the bronze doors of heaven. But God did not come out. In fact, nothing happened. Did you ever try anything for a long time with great effort and with no success? You get psychologically glutted, fed up with trying. And then you quit.
Well, one day I woke up, and instead of throwing a few more futile appeals over that high brick wall to a God who may be or may not be there, I just quit. I decided that I didn't really care . about God, about an afterlife, or anything like that. "I decided to spend what time I had left doing something more profitable. I thought about you and your class and I remembered something else you had said: 'The essential sadness is to go through life without loving. But it would be almost equally sad to go through life and leave this world without ever telling those you loved that you had loved them."
"So I began with the hardest one: my Dad. He was reading the newspaper when I approached him." "Dad". . . "Yes,what?" he asked without lowering the newspaper. "Dad, I would like to talk with you." "Well, talk." "I mean. .. . It's really important." The newspaper came down three slow inches. "What is it?" "Dad, I love you. I just wanted you to know that."Tom smiled at me and said with obvious satisfaction, as though he felt a warm and secret joy flowing inside of him: "The newspaper fluttered to the floor. Then my father did two things I could never remember him ever doing before. He cried and he hugged me. And we talked all night, even though he had to go to work the next morning. It felt so good to be close to my father, to see his tears, to feel his hug, to hear him say that he loved me.
"It was easier with my mother and little brother. They cried with me, too, and we hugged each other, and started saying real nice things to each other. We shared the things we had been keeping secret for so many years. I was only sorry about one thing: that I had waited so long. Here I was just beginning to open up to all the people I had actually been close to.
"Then, one day I turned around and God was there. He didn't come to me when I pleaded with him. I guess I was like an animal trainer holding out a hoop, 'C'mon, jump through. 'C'mon, I'll give you three days three weeks.' Apparently God does things in his own way and at his own hour. "But the important thing is that he was there. He found me. You were right. He found me even after I stopped looking for him."
"Tommy," I practically gasped, "I think you are saying something very important and much more universal than you realize. To me, at least, you are saying that the surest way to find God is not to make him a private possession, a problem solver, or an instant consolation in time of need, but rather by opening to love. You know, the Apostle John said that. He said God is love, and anyone who lives in love is living with God and God is living in him."
"Tom, could I ask you a favor? You know, when I had you in class you were a real pain. But (laughingly) you can make it all up to me now. Would you come into my present Theology of Faith course and tell them what you have just told me? If I told them the same thing it wouldn't be half as effective as if you were to tell them."
"Oooh . . . I was ready for you, but I don't know if I'm ready for your class."
"Tom, think about it. If and when you are ready, give me a call."
In a few days Tommy called, said he was ready for the class, that he wanted to do that for God and for me. So we scheduled a date. However, he never made it. He had another appointment, far more important than the one with me and my class. Of course, his life was not really ended by his death, only changed. He made the great step from faith into vision. He found a life far more beautiful than the eye of man has ever seen or the ear of man has ever heard or the mind of man has ever imagined. Before he died, we talked one last time.
"I'm not going to make it to your class," he said. "I know, Tom." "Will you tell them for me? Will you . . . tell the whole world for me?" "I will, Tom. I'll tell them. I'll do my best." So, to all of you who have been kind enough to hear this simple statement about love, thank you for listening. And to you, Tommy, somewhere in the sunlit, verdant hills of heaven: "I told them, Tommy . . as best I could."

I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy...
From my own limited experience I have found that
the greatest degree of inner tranquility comes from the
development of love and compassion.
The more we care for the happiness of others,
the greater our own sense of well-being becomes.
Cultivating a close, warmhearted feeling for others
automatically puts the mind at ease.
This helps remove whatever fears or insecurities we may have
and gives us the strength to cope with any obstacles we encounter.
It is the ultimate source of success in life.

There's a Reflection Pool in the Butterfly Garden
At the foot of the sundial
that reads "I only record sunny hours"
Flat stones invite kneeling, squatting
before a carpet of green lush grass growing
and Daffodils have their brilliant faces on parade
Today I have this special privilege
the garden to myself
I am in wealth today ~ I have a pool
A bouquet of yellow flowers
Little creatures under the water
Rich growing plants surrounded
This place is like my room for improvement
Spacious, inviting, tender feel for my soul
When I get soul-thirsty I come to the pool
So it can feed me slivers of the sun
scallops of clouds on its blissful surface
I can see myself in the depth/height
as the pool sees me
sufficient comfort
then I know I am not invisible
I am able to grasp things more firmly
when I can sense myself
when I know I am Home

Addiction
An image of life beating in my mind.
A picturesque illusion,
Neither loving or kind.
My heart pulses quickly with anxiety and fear.
While the demons within become all to clear.
An indiscriminate evil relaxed in my soul.
Relay words of anger,
Again, I lost control
I feel trapped in a haze.....
Outside looking in.
Controlled by hands that muzzle
My screams from within.
Things that were once familiar
Now seem so strange.
My body shakes uncontrollably
As I fill with rage.
Can't anyone see that this isn't me?
I want out of this hell,
I want to be free !!!!

So In Gratitude I Say
God has granted me a new day
So in gratitude I say
May you find
Peace and serenity
May you enjoy being free
My heart is open
To my inner voice
Today I make a choice
I choose to smile
I choose to spread joy
I feel like a child
With a new toy
I smile and tell everyone
I happen to meet
How God has granted me
A new life so sweet
Today I have been granted
Another chance
So in gratitude
